Karathis Hills

Pronunciation: caw-RAY-thiss
  Map Index: E3
Location: North central Beorlan, between Cieli Bay in the west and the Gre’aa Escarpment and Taa to the east.
Geography: These rugged hills offer scenic vistas along Cieli Bay as the land slopes steeply westward from the abrupt shear rocky cliffs of the Gre’aa Escarpment and the plateau of Taa. Bare rock outcrops proliferate on this rugged landscape.
  Primary Population: None
  Secondary Population: Herukh, Sareisi
  Minor Population: Garuun, Ranfaroth
Climate: The climate of the Karathis Hills is temperate with mostly mild winters that bring cool days and cold nights, accompanied by generous seasonal rains that nourish the land. In most winters, several large snowstorms will descend from the high plains of Talathtarr, bringing the full fury of winter to the land. However, these storms are brief, and the snow quickly melts. In summer, the long sunny days bring heat and many weeks of drought, punctuated by occasional thunderstorms. Native grasses and scrubby vegetation dominate the landscape, adapted to the long dry summer months, send their roots deep in a quest for life giving moisture.
Wildlife: With few humanoid inhabitants, this land offers a sanctuary for wildlife. The hills host a diverse array of wildlife, from panthers, hares, foxes, and badgers to small birds and cliff nesting falcons that thrive amidst the rugged beauty.
Humanoids: Most of the humanoids do not live here year round but travel into the Karathis Hills during the spring and summer months. The Herukh and Sareisi come down from the high lands of Taa and Talalath Tarr to gather healing herbs which grow plentifully. The Ranfaroth visit briefly each year to quarry obsidian which they use create sharp arrowheads and spear points. The Garuun, on the other hand, travel in small bands to dig into hillsides in search of valuable gemstones.
Monsters:, The Karathis Hills are inhabited by small tribes of Hill Giants that live in caves they carved into rocky hillsides. Staying away from these dwelling places will likely reduce the chances of a dangerous encounter as they are fiercely territorial in these areas. There are also a few Crag Men that live in these hills. They generally bother no one if they are left alone.
History: Prior to the Great Cataclysm, this land was greener and had small trees. However, with the great sudden uplift of the land that produced the escarpments of Gre’aa and Gre’larr the climate has gotten noticeably drier and resulting in the loss of most of the trees.
Today: This wilderness landscape is picturesque and filled with wildlife. With few year-round humanoid occupants, wildlife has flourished.
