Gulf of Shenn’valea

Pronunciation: SHEN-valley-ah

Map Index: E4, E5

Location: Northeastern Beorlan

Description: The Gulf of Shenn’valea, situated off the northeastern coast of Beorlan and the southeastern coast of Aorlan, is an expanse of water sheltered from the tumultuous waves of the Sea of Beledor. Formed during the Great Cataclysm, this body of water grew larger as the land of Shenn’valea sank beneath the sea, accompanied by violent seismic upheavals that devastated the once-beautiful valley.

Today, the Gulf serves as a sanctuary for merchant ships navigating through the unpredictable storms of the Sea of Beledor. The coastline bears remnants of the sunken valley's former beauty, hauntingly scattered along the shoreline. Yet, danger looms in these azure waters. To the south lies the ominous kingdom of Kraal, governed by barbarous orcs. Their raiding vessels venture into the Gulf, preying on unsuspecting fishing vessels. Orc pirates from Kraal have commandeered numerous ships, making these otherwise serene waters perilous for seafarers.

Water Characteristics: This saline body of waterfinds itself subject to substantial influence from the tides. Tides of over 30 feet occur in the far western portion of the gulf.

Geography and Geology: This sunken river valley still has some old hills that rise from the bottom of the gulf and sit perilously close to the surface. These rocky shoals give little indication that they are there and cause shipwrecks as sailing vessels smash their hulls against bare granite bedrock.

Climate and Weather Patterns: The gulf provides safe shelter for merchant shipping when great storms rage in the Sea of Beledor.

Marine Life: The Gulf of Shenn’valea has become one of the world's richest fisheries, attracting fishing vessels from distant realms.

Cultural & Historical Significance: The loss of Shenn'valea during the Great Cataclysm unfolded in a matter of weeks. The land, the priciple homeland of the halfling race and regarded by many as one of the most beautiful lands in the precataclymic world began a rapid sinking until all of the lowland parts of the valley were underwater.
