Grozhak Wasteland
Pronunciation: GROZ-zack
Map Index: G-3
Location: Southwest Beorlan, northwest and west of Vornlithor along the coast
Geography: The Grozhak Wasteland consists of broken plains much like Taldrinor, except they appear blackened and charred due to frequent fires. Steep ravines and gullies can make passage across this land difficult due to the massive erosion that occurs every time torrential storms strike along the coast. The land reeks of smoke while a perpetual smoky haze fills the sky. Charcoal and burnt plants give a black and dark gray cast to the land.
Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: Fire Goblin
Minor Population: Turoch
Climate: The climate is tropical and hot year-round. Most of this area’s rainfall arrives in large violent storms that blow in from the sea. With prodigious amounts of rainfall, the sudden abundance of water leads to fast bursts of new plant growth, suddenly greening the land. However, this moisture soon disappears as the blazing sun and extremely hot temperatures dry the land. These drought conditions then prime the wasteland for renewed fires.
Wildlife: The wasteland constantly alternates between lush growth after storms and charred vegetation after fires. Only the most fire-tolerant plants can exist here, leading to a collection of unusual plants, some of which exist nowhere else.
Due to the fires, the only animals that live in the Grozhak Wasteland are primarily those who build or utilize underground shelters where they can escape should fires come their way. Lizards, snakes, and small rodents dominate the native wildlife of the wasteland.
Humanoids: The only permanent inhabitants that remain here year-round are the fire goblins. Living in networks of hand dug caves, they readily take shelter whenever fires threaten, safe in their underground dwellings.
Monsters: Large packs of hell hounds prowl the charred wasteland, their mournful nocturnal baying striking fear into all that hear them. Some of the hell hounds serve tribes of fire giants which also call this wasteland home. Resistant to fire, these giants have little to fear. Lastly, the most feared monsters of the wasteland are corrupted treants. Tales of these large and extremely dangerous creatures come from the fire goblins. They describe what looks like tall, blackened trees with vaguely humanoid features. Known as a Bonfire Treants, the fire goblins claim these are creatures from another age that became corrupted when the Chaos Storms struck during the Great Cataclysm. Today they constantly stride across the wasteland looking for enemies who seek to destroy them.
History: Prior to the Great Cataclysm, the Grozhak Wasteland was considered part of Taldrinor. With the sudden appearance of the mighty volcano of Krakurod and the slow expansion of the ash filled lands of Vornlithdor, the surrounding lands became corrupted. Gradually the old plains became increasingly scarred by frequent fires, transforming them into their current condition as a corrupted wasteland.
Today: The Grozhak Wasteland stands as an undesirable and dangerous place to visit. A smoky haze and rising small clouds of smoke float across a bleak landscape tortured by fire. Few visit here except the fire goblins and occasional Turoch. Rumors say there may be veins of gold in this forsaken land. Several large pits dug by fire giants may in fact be gold mines, but no human has ever made it back out of this land with proof of the gold.
