Crytharal Peninsula
Pronunciation: CRITH-thar-ral
Map Index: D-3, E-3
Location: North central Beorlan, west of Cieli Bay.
Geography: The Crytharal Peninsula juts northeastward from the Aurum Mountains and is surrounded by water and high bedrock cliffs on 3 sides. Strong waves roll in from the Great Western Sea, crashing against its rugged rocky shore. The east side of the peninsula faces the calm waters of Cieli Bay and contains many sandy beaches. Atop the cliffs, the eastern side of the peninsula is mostly level and covered in short green grasses. By contrast, the west side of Crytharal contains much more rugged and rocky terrain.
Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Garuun gnomes
Climate: The climate of the Crytharal Peninsula is temperate, with mostly-mild winters that bring cool days and cold nights, accompanied by generous seasonal rains that nourish the land. In summer, the long sunny days bring heat and many weeks of drought, punctuated by afternoon thunderstorms that provide some much-needed rain. Short native grasses and scrubby vegetation dominate the landscape, adapted to the long dry summer months, send their roots deep in a quest for life giving moisture. The peninsula contains many small burned areas where recent wildfires have incinerated the vegetation. Grasses quickly grow in these spots giving the landscape a patchy look of short grasses scrubby plants.
Wildlife: With almost no humanoid inhabitants, this land offers a sanctuary for wildlife. The peninsula hosts a diverse array of small wildlife but lacks any mammals of size. There are large numbers of hares, and a few foxes. However, the peninsula provides a home for large numbers of cliff-nesting birds, including falcons.
Humanoids: The peninsula provides a safe habitat for large numbers of merfolk which live in the waters of Cieli Bay and sunbathe on sandy beaches which lie under the tall Crytharal cliffs. The chimeras (see below) generally leave the merfolk alone as they simply dive quickly into the bay as soon as danger is sighted. No humanoids live here year-round, but Garuun gnomes visit during the spring and summer months, collecting amethyst crystals which are plentiful in the native rock. They also collect colorful shells from along the shore at low tide.
Monsters:, The Crytharal Peninsula presents dangers to larger creatures due to the presence of a mated pair of chimeras living on the southwestern part of the peninsula. They hunt for food from the air. Signs of their presence include burned patches of vegetation: one of a chimera's three heads is the head of a red dragon with, of course, breath of flame.
History: Prior to the Great Cataclysm, this land had groves of small trees. However, with the great sudden uplift of the land that produced Taa and Talathtarr, the climate has gotten noticeably drier and most of the trees have since died.
Today: This wilderness landscape is picturesque and filled with birds. The lack of humanoid occupants has allowed wildlife to flourish.
