Anhagga Bay

Pronunciation: an-HAG-ga

Map Index: E4, E5, F4, F5

Location: Northeast coast of Beorlan.

Description: This large bay has a depth of 30 to 60 feet, with shallower areas near the shoreline. While most of the bay is easily navigable, a few scattered shallow shoals exist that present navigation hazards for deep hulled ocean going vessels.

Water Characteristics: The saline waters of the bay are temperate, with temperatures warming and cooling with the seasons.

Geography and Geology: The coastline along most of the bay is rocky with incised low rocky cliffs carved into much of the shoreline. Most of the areas with sandy beaches exist near the mouth of the Anhagga River.

Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None

Climate and Weather Patterns: The temperate climate leads to great temperature changes throughout the year. Large and sometime violent storms track westward out of the Sea of Beledor. These gales often last for several days. Coves in the northern and southern ends of the bay provide much needed cover for ships during these events.

Marine Life: The bay teems with fish and serves as an important nursery area for young fish. Large numbers of birds nest along the shore feeding on the fish. Mermaids reside near the mouth of the Anhagga River and can often be seen sunning themselves on small sandy islands just offshore.

Cultural & Historical Significance: Positioned along the busy north-south coastal trade route that runs along the coast of Beorlan and Aorlan, the bay provides a safe haven for ships caught up in powerful storms while sailing the Sea of Beledor. However, the bay has also gained notoriety as a secluded layover for pirates who exploit its strategic location to launch attacks on trade vessels.

On the north side of the bay looms the foreboding darkness of Kraal, a region ruled by a malevolent kingdom of barbaric orcs. The perpetual gloom of this area envelops the northern half of the bay, as thick clouds and perpetual fog obscure the sun, casting the land into an eerie twilight even during daylight hours. Even fires and torches struggle to illuminate in this shadowy expanse.

On the south side lies the peninsula of Khu, a land of danger due to overflights by great dragons protecting the city-state of Khu which claims the whole peninsula as its own. Rumors persist that the city provides safe harbor to pirates and eagerly trades for their stolen goods.

The western shores of Anhagga Bay stretch into the wild lands of Vhoon, a favored territory for pirate encampments. Navigating these waters demands caution, as concealed shoals near the mouth of the Anhagga River present navigation hazards while the ever-looming threat of pirate ambushes make the bay a perilous passage for unwary sailors.

Anhagga Bay greatly increased in size as a result of coastal subsidence during the Great Cataclysm as a large amount of land sunk beneath the waters of the bay during this tragic event.
