Faulna
The First City isn’t ere for your ‘and-wringin, Fedder. It don’t care one bit about ‘ow fings “outta be”. No crown but the ones in the monybags, companyfolk instead a’ nobles, thieves for guards. But fuck me, if it don’t all just work out, yeah? It’s been this way longer n’ anyfin in the kingdoms- fuck, long’r n’ any kingdom at all.
I’ve not been robbed at knifepoint but once, Fedder. Once. Next day I sees the same manky fuck strung up at Petrasanc Crossing, wifout a shred a’ skin left on ‘im, red as a sunburned cock-comb. Stiff. An I’d not even whispered about the mugin’ to a soul. See, the Jennies run fings in this ward, and they’ll mort anyfin that that looks a purse crossway wifout their sayso. Dead gruesome, too. They don’t stroll for teatime.
The guilds don’t go nicking coins off belts, anyway, since they get ‘em from us all the same. We pay their protection rackets, and fuck me, but we stay protected. Works the same in Mar-Quartier with the Ticks, and Alfienne an’ Wessel have the Spooks… All the wards ‘ave some “Company” in control, and they’re all fucking ruthless about it- so they keep the balance.
Same as taxes anywhere else, really. Only difference is the Companyfolk are honest about the fact that their robbing you.
We’re plain folk, here. Decent folk. Maybe a bit clever, and a bit loud, but all the same. We help each other get by, we enjoy the hells outta life, an’ we get done what needs done. We all know Faulna is run by villains an’ cut-throats, but what gods-damned city isn’t? It’s just how it is ‘ere. Just how it’s always been. Canny by us.
Besides… The Old City’s always a wondrous thing. It feels fit to crack with just… life, yeah? You can find anyfin ‘ere. Everyfin’. It’s joyous an’ it’s shit and it’s beautiful and it works even when it shouldn’t, by all rights.
