A war in the shadows of the mages college and witchhunting orders

Magic is required to power the Chambers of Song which allow near instant communication across the vast distances of the world, thus mages are the essential lines of communication around the Magistrates. While this means the Chambers of Song are closely guarded, few eyes are ever watchful. In time there were some among the colleges that used these chamber to plot rebellion and political power plays. This played into a weakened state of the colleges who had a lull in their recruitments and a rise in their deaths.   It resulted in a game of shadows and lies with members of the Mage Colleges and Witch Hunter Orders on both sides of a war that raged for years. It played out very much in the background of events during the rest of the world for its first few years before it expanded far beyond its begins and tore at the very heart of the empire.
