Slang In A Superheroic World
It stands to reason that in a world with superpowered individuals that language would adapt to their presense just as any other society shaping situation. Slang, or informal words and phrases, would become very common especially within the superhuman subculture. Below are several examples of slang that relate to the superhuman world:
- A-Team: The Avengers. Not a favorable term.
- Arlington: A hero's funeral. "Jake's made the trip to Arlington."
- BEM: Bug Eyed Monster. Refers to any alien. Generally considered xenophobic.
- Big Boom*: A successful supervillain job, especially on involving terrorism.
- Big Brother’s Clubhouse: The Avenger’s Orbital Platform. Also just Big Brother.
- C-Section: Chaos Cult group.
- Cape*: Anyone with superpowers although usually a hero. Variations include White Cape (hero) or Black Cape (villain).
- Cliffhanger*: A real close fight.
- Crater Maker*: A haymaker or really powerful energy blast.
- Cult Case*: A resurrected deity.
- D-Banger/D-Head: Gang member who uses DMN-730. Entire gangs can be referred to as D-Bangers or D-Heads.
- The Dark Annoying Place*: Being knocked out in a fight.
- Fang Pull: A successfully concluded case involving VIPER. “We pulled their fangs on that Mint case.”
- Fire’s Out*: A super combat is over.
- Fireworks Factory*: An energy projector, or any overly colorful super hero/villain costume.
- Force Field of God*: A great performance or incredible luck shown by a super. “He was protected by the force field of God.”
- Glow Boy*: Any super with a visible force field. Also Glow Girl.
- Golden Boy: Any hero who appears very favorable in the media. Also any hero who has “gone Hollywood.” Also, Golden Girl.
- Gone Moral*: A retired supervillain. Also a supervillain who hasn’t been seen for a while.
- Lazarus Job*: A super who comes back from the dead. Usually a villain.
- Main Event*: A major fight between superheroes and supervillains.
- Mask: A superhero.
- Photogenic*: Being unconscious when the press arrive at the end of a fight.
- Pulled out of the phone booth: Having your secret ID go public.
- Red Head: Member of the Cult of Chaos.
- Shopping for Tombstones: Refers to a thrill seeking super, usually a young hero.
- Smear Job*: A bloody super death.
- Snakebite: A case where VIPER escaped. “They all got away. It was a real snakebite.”
- Snake Boys: VIPER. Also Boys in Green.
- Snake Job: Any case involving VIPER.
- Speed Freak: A person with speed abilities.
- Wall Bouncer*: A super who gets knocked out frequently in fights.
- Winghead: Captain America or any patriotic hero.
