En Yi'sea
(eh)Nantar Yisea, Serôs
Archaic pronunciation "Nant'ar Yi'see" ||| Modern pronunciation "ehn-an'tar why'see" often dropping the latter part of (eh)Nantar "Ehn why-see"
Named after the founding Princeps, Yisea, and evoking the grand tales of Myth Nantar, the City of Destinies, before the spellplague Nantar Yisea roughly means "the city destined to be founded by Yisea". Exact meanings are difficult as the pronunciation and dialect as a whole have moved so much in the millennium since the founding. It is one of the oldest and most eclectic merfolk settlements, and one of the few merfolk cities, as most prefer to live in smaller clans. The royal Yisean ("Yi-shawn") clan keeps the archaic Yisea ("yi-see") as their second name, but it is common for Merfolk in the city to name firstborn daughters Yisea as a personal name with the modern pronunciation ("why-see")
Serôs - Literally translated to "the embracing life"; this is the merfolk term for the undersea realms of the Sea of Fallen Stars
The first Princeps Yisea was a noble, a high priestess of Eadro, and a veteran of the rebellion at Thalorlyn that slaughtered some 30% of all merfolk in Serôs. No one can say for sure which side she fought for, or even if her allegiances changed at some point, but scholars agree that the brutality spurred her to move her house and followers away and create relationships with seafaring (but not aquatic) peoples, Fey, and underdark denizens.
Most people live in the hard rock tunnels and coral shaped into tunnels and homes. Outside the caves are ranges for domesticated fish, defenses, the Princeps' place, the royal docyard, and trade-focused activities. The temples, socializing spaces, schools, healers, and maintenance staff are in the tunnels.
The Princeps [...] Yisea
The Royal Dockyards
A relic from before the second sundering refilled the sea of fallen stars. While they have been used for repair, construction, and even innovation (deep gnome???) the lack of interaction with live seafaring folk in the past decade has left it in disrepair.
