The Adventure Begins

Welcome, brave adventurers, to the quaint mining town of Phandalin! Nestled amidst the rugged terrain of the Sword Mountains. Phandalin stands as a testament to both the resilience of its inhabitants and the untamed beauty of the surrounding landscape.   Phandalin, once a bustling hub of mining activity, is surrounded by dense woodlands and craggy hills that hide ancient secrets. The town's prosperity was once tied to the nearby Wave Echo Cave, a rich source of magical minerals and precious metals. However, the town fell into disarray after the cave's location was lost to history, leaving the once-thriving mining community to grapple with economic hardship. Compounded by an Orc Horde that swept the region, the town of Phandalin was left to grapple with the very notion of survival. Couple all of these struggles with the fact that a new threat has descended upon this town in the form of Cryovain the young white dragon that has recently made Phandalin and the Sword Mountains its new territory.   As you approach Phandalin, the first thing that strikes you is the contrast between the rugged exterior and the humble charm of the town itself. Dilapidated wooden buildings line the streets, their roofs showing signs of wear and tear. A palpable sense of both nostalgia and hope hangs in the air as townsfolk go about their daily routines, working hard to revitalize their home.   As your party makes its way through the cobbled streets, you can hear the distant clinking of pickaxes against rocks, a reminder of the town's mining roots. The rhythmic sounds echo through the air, creating a backdrop to the low hum of conversation from the townsfolk who gather in the central square. Children play near the town well, their laughter intermingling with the occasional shouts of merchants peddling their wares.   Phandalin is not without its share of mysteries and intrigue. Gossip and rumors float through the air like whispers on the wind, hinting at hidden treasures, long-lost artifacts, and the potential resurgence of the mining industry that once defined the town.   As your party steps further into Phandalin, you can't help but feel a sense of anticipation. The town holds the promise of adventure, with opportunities for heroism, exploration, and the unraveling of the mysteries that shroud its past. The journey begins here, in Phandalin, where the echoes of the Wave Cave beckon and the tales of old await the touch of new heroes.   As your party makes its way towards the heart of Phandalin, you find yourselves passing by a variety of establishments that hint at the town's diverse population. A rustic blacksmith's shop clangs with the sound of hammer on anvil, and the warm glow of the forge spills onto the street. The local inn, known as the Stonehill Inn, stands as a welcoming haven with its wooden facade and a sign creaking softly in the breeze.   The aroma of freshly baked bread wafts from the local bakery, and the herbal scents from the apothecary mingle with the more pungent odors emanating from the bustling town market. The market square is alive with activity, as merchants peddle goods ranging from exotic trinkets to local produce. A grizzled farmer hawks his crops, while a charismatic bard entertains a growing crowd with tales of legendary heroes.   As you continue towards the central square, you notice a large town hall with a wooden sign proudly proclaiming Townmaster's Hall. This is the seat of governance in Phandalin, where the Townmaster attempts to maintain order and deal with the various challenges facing the community.   Your arrival has not gone unnoticed. Curious gazes follow your party as you navigate the town, and whispers of excitement ripple through the crowd. Some locals eye you with hope, perhaps seeing in your group the potential saviors the town needs, while others regard you with a more cautious curiosity, their trust not easily earned.   In the central square, a large notice board catches your attention. Parchments are pinned to the board, detailing various quests and requests for aid. One notice, in particular, stands out — a plea for assistance from the local Lionshield Coster, asking for help in dealing with a recent surge in bandit activity that has been plaguing the trade routes.   As you ponder your next steps, the Townmaster, a middle-aged man with a stern but weary expression, approaches. He introduces himself as Harbin Wester and, with a mix of desperation and gratitude, beseeches your aid in restoring Phandalin to its former glory.

HARBIN WESTER - TOWNMASTER

Townmaster Harbin Wester, a man worn by the weight of responsibility, greets your party with a weary but hopeful smile. His graying hair and furrowed brow hint at the countless challenges he's faced in trying to govern Phandalin amidst its struggles.

"Welcome, travelers," he says, his voice carrying the weight of both gratitude and desperation. "Word of your arrival has reached me, and I dare say, your timing couldn't be better. Phandalin is in need of heroes, and it seems the fates have brought you here."

Harbin goes on to share the town's plight. The once-thriving mining community has fallen on hard times after the loss of Wave Echo Cave, and now, the resurgence of bandit activity threatens what little stability remains. Trade routes are disrupted, supplies are dwindling, and the people of Phandalin look to Harbin for guidance.

"We face troubles on multiple fronts," Harbin explains, gesturing towards the notice board. "The Lionshield Coster seeks aid against bandits disrupting trade. There are reports of strange occurrences in the nearby woods, and I've heard whispers of ancient ruins that might hold the key to Phandalin's prosperity. But I fear my hands are tied, and I lack the resources to address all these issues at once."

With a hopeful gaze, he looks to your party.

"Will you lend your strength to Phandalin? Beginning with dealing with recent bandit threats before investigating the mysteries that surround us, perhaps even delving into the forgotten history of our town; whatever you choose will shape the future of this town. It would benefit you greatly to rest yourselves at Stonehill Inn as you better acquaint yourself with our town. I look forward to your favorable assistance in these trying times."

Harbin Wester's eyes reflect a mix of desperation and determination. The destiny of Phandalin, that was once a prosperous mining town, now hangs in the balance, awaiting the influence and decisions of your party.   As you consider your options, the sounds of the bustling town around you continue, a backdrop to the unfolding tale of a community seeking redemption and renewal. Eager to delve into the challenges facing Phandalin, your party decides to explore the town further. As you make your way through the cobblestone streets, you pass by townsfolk who regard you with a mixture of curiosity and hope. The sun casts a warm glow over the rustic buildings, creating a sense of both nostalgia and potential in the air.

STONEHILL INN

The Stonehill Inn, a welcoming sight with its wooden exterior and hanging sign, invites you inside. The creak of the door announces your arrival as you step into a cozy common room filled with the scent of hearty stew and the soothing sounds of a minstrel playing a gentle melody in the corner. The innkeeper, a friendly halfling named Toblen Stonehill, greets you with a warm smile.

"Welcome to the Stonehill Inn, travelers! My name's Toblen, and I'm at your service. If you're looking for a place to rest, a warm meal, or perhaps some information, you've come to the right spot."

As you settle into the comfortable surroundings, you notice a diverse mix of patrons — locals sharing tales over mugs of ale, traders discussing business, and a few other adventurers like yourselves. The atmosphere is friendly, and the inn seems to be a hub of communal activity. Toblen, sensing your eagerness to help, leans in with a lowered voice.

"If you're interested in lending a hand to Phandalin, you might want to speak with a few key figures around here. Sildar Hallwinter, a fellow in a blue cloak, is staying here and may have valuable insights. There's also Sister Garaele, the local elf who frequents the Shrine of Luck. And of course, the local miners and merchants might have their own tales to tell."

With a knowing look, Toblen adds,

"Be cautious, though. Phandalin has its share of secrets, and not everyone may be as they seem. The town may be in need, but trust is earned, not freely given."

As you sip on a warm drink and ponder your next move, the inn's atmosphere becomes a backdrop for possibilities. The Stonehill Inn is more than just a place to rest; it's a hub where stories intertwine, destinies unfold, and the future of Phandalin awaits the decisions of your party.   Toblen gestures toward a corner of the Stonehill Inn, where a figure in a distinctive blue cloak catches your eye.

"Over there, that's Sildar Hallwinter,"

  Toblen says.

"He's been asking questions about the bandit activity, and I reckon he could use some assistance as he is in the employ of Linene Graywind the leader of Lionshielf Coster. A good man, he is. You might find some common ground with him."

Sildar Hallwinter, a seasoned warrior with a calm demeanor, acknowledges your presence with a nod as you approach. He shares his concern about the bandits who have been terrorizing Phandalin, disrupting trade and instilling fear in the townsfolk. Sildar reveals that he is searching for a missing friend named Gundren Rockseeker, a dwarf who had recently rediscovered the location of the lost Wave Echo Cave.   "Gundren's discovery could be the key to Phandalin's prosperity,"   Sildar explains.   "But the bandits kidnapped him before he could share the cave's location. I'm here to find him and put an end to the bandit threat. If you're willing, we could join forces."   Sildar's eyes reflect a combination of determination and concern, and he eagerly awaits your decision.   Toblen then points to a hooded figure in the corner, engrossed in a worn book.   "That's Sister Garaele,"   he says.   "She tends to the Shrine of Luck just south of here. Rumor has it she seeks adventurers for a task of her own. Might be worth your time to speak with her."   As you approach Sister Garaele, she looks up from her book with a warm smile. She explains that she has a delicate mission to retrieve a valuable spellbook from the nearby Old Owl Well, and she seeks your help in completing this task.   "The spellbook is of great importance to the town,"   she says.   "I believe it holds the key to understanding and countering the mysterious forces that have been stirring in the region."   Toblen jovially steps in on the conversation and suggests talking to the local miners and merchants for additional insights. He mentions Halia Thornton, the ambitious owner of the Miner's Exchange, and Linene Graywind, proprietor of the Lionshield Coster, both of whom might have tasks suited for capable adventurers. Toblin notes that Linene would be the best to meet with first as Halia Thornton is currently conducting a safety investigation within the mines in search of a new profitable vein.   The Stonehill Inn becomes a nexus of potential alliances and quests as your party interacts with these key figures. The fate of Phandalin hangs in the balance, and the choices you make will shape the town's future and your own adventure in this rich and storied land.   LIONSHIELD COSTER – LINENE GRAYWIND INTRODUCTION   Leaving the welcoming atmosphere of the Stonehill Inn, your party sets out for the Lionshield Coster, a prominent trading post in Phandalin.   As you approach, the building's sturdy construction and well-maintained appearance stand in contrast to some of the more weathered structures in town.   Pushing open the door, a bell chimes to announce your arrival, and the scent of polished wood and iron greets your senses. Rows of weapons, armor, and general supplies line the shelves, displaying a variety of goods catering to the needs of adventurers and townsfolk alike. At the counter, a middle-aged woman with a no-nonsense expression, sharp eyes, and tightly braided silver hair greets you with a calculating gaze.   "Welcome to the Lionshield Coster. I am Linene Graywind, and I run this establishment,"   she says, her voice firm and businesslike.   "If you're here for weapons, armor, or any supplies you might need for your endeavors, you've come to the right place. But I'm not one for small talk, so make your business clear."   Linene listens intently as you explain your purpose in Phandalin and your desire to aid the town. Her stern expression softens slightly, revealing a hint of cautious interest. She acknowledges the recent troubles facing the town, including the bandit threat which she discloses as a group of Goblins and Kobolds who have been displaced by Cryovain’s recent upheaval in the region. She did not leave out their constant and annoying disruptions to trade and its effect on the town.   "I could use some capable individuals,"   Linene admits, her eyes narrowing with a shrewd focus.   "The Goblins and Kobalds have been a thorn in my side, causing trouble for both my business and the town as a whole. If you're willing to deal with them, there might be something in it for you."   She leans in, lowering her voice.   "I've heard rumors that the Goblins and Kobalds operate from the forests of Phandalin. Find them, and put an end to their influence, and you'll earn my gratitude. And believe me, my gratitude is not without its rewards."   Upon expressing your willingness to assist in dealing with the threat, a subtle nod of approval from Linene Graywind acknowledges your decision. She leans in, her sharp eyes locking onto yours.   "Good. I'm not one to mince words, so I'll get straight to it. The pack of filth have been causing trouble for the Lionshield Coster and the entire town. They operate from a hidden base in the forests outside of town. Find it, deal with their leadership, and put an end to their menace."   Linene further emphasizes the importance of discretion.   "Don't go announcing your intentions to the whole town getting the hopes up of these old and weary souls. The Goblins and Kobalds are enough to keep you busy for a while. Your first steps into those woods and they won't take kindly to presence."   Linene hands you a map marked with several locations within the forests outlining the town.   "This should guide you to the potential entrances and last known locations from previous skirmishes that others have found.   (If the party met Sildar, then he will be available to the party as an NPC. Opens up a side quest to interlocking quests and Gundren’s discovery)   Don’t forget to be discreet; the creatures are cunning. Bring an end to their activities, and I'll make it worth your while. My coffers are not light, and my gratitude is not without its rewards."   As you leave the Lionshield Coster, the weight of Linene's mission lingers. The task ahead seems daunting, but the promise of rewards and the potential to free Phandalin from the grip of the Redbrands propel your party forward. The hidden base awaits, and with every step, the town's fate hangs in the balance. The adventure in Phandalin takes a decisive turn, and your party's actions will shape the destiny of this beleaguered mining town.   As you leave the Lionshield Coster, the weight of Linene's sharp-tongued words lingers in the air. The Goblins and Kobold threat looms, and the prospect of uncovering their hidden base adds another layer of mystery to Phandalin's troubles. The town holds its breath, waiting for the actions of your party to shape its destiny.
