Train Conductor

That job used to take your grandfather all over the country. There were tracks going in all sorts of directions. He loved knowing he was helping people get places quickly and safely. It's really a shame the profession's been discontinued due to dire past events.

Before The Great Shattering segmented the lands of Phaiyon, many areas were lined with railroad tracks. This profession handled the control and general upkeep of the various trains used in the past. It was unionized; many conductors loved the position and stayed with it for a long time.

Duties

Conductors run their assigned train and cargo along tracks between different train stations. They work with mechanics and other staff to ensure the locomotive stays clean, safe, and in working order. They're responsible for all cargo whether it be goods or people.   Using a radio system, they keep in touch with each station and other trains to maintain clear communication. This helps prevent certain mishaps and conductors are able to respond to changes due to unforeseen events if need be.   Conductors must be vigilant while operating their train. Most trips run smoothly, but there's always a chance for something to be on any upcoming stretch of track. They must also be alert to any malfunctions and do their best to take immediate action to resolve issues when needed.

Education and Training

A college degree is not required, but can be helpful in the long run. At the bare minimum, each conductor must partake in a three year apprenticeship. They are partnered with senior operators who have a minimum of 10 years experience.   During training they will learn all of the basic operations and safety procedures. General mechanical knowledge will be covered, but hard skills are not required. This will allow the conductor to better assess if a situation requires their on board mechanic. Sometimes simple trouble shooting is enough.

Relics of the Past

A large percent of Phaiyon's railways were severely damaged during the Shatter. These systems are currently not operational. It's unknown if new tracks will be built in the future. The current shattered state of the remaining land would also make it difficult to rebuild a sturdy and safe system.   Surviving conductors either retired, changed fields completely, or took up other transportation roles for methods still in use.
