Korriv
No matter the names they adopt, the houses they build, or the customs they adapt to, the Korriv will always be a people apart. They look like mainlanders, but they speak a language akin to Ma'atuuq. Whereas darkness is a thing to be feared and shunned in most cultures, it is a deeply revered among the Korriv. The make their palaces of Ezrennaki shipwrecks, hauled together and connected with boards, yet never construct massive structures of their own. In most ways, they are an alien people to the men of Peven. And if Korriv legends are to be believed, they are also alien to this world.
According to oral tradition, when the world was first birthed from the minds of the Ma'um upon the ashes of the A'dara Kahral, corpses washed up on the shores of that fetid primal sea. They had been left behind from the destruction of the previous world, as had so many sections of land. When they surfaced, waterlogged and decaying, they were so saturated by the magic used in the creation of the world that they returned to life. The gods placed them among the first humans, and allowed them to people the largest pocket of surviving land; what would become the isle of Korriven.
While this is highly unlikely, it shows the individual spirit of Korriven and (possibly) provides an explanation for the Korriv maritime prowess and for their connection to ghosts. However, most ethnologists today support that they must instead be the descendants of isolated groups of Ma'atuuq fishermen who developed a unique culture on the windswept isle of Korriven, mingling with southern peoples possibly related to the modern Ezrennaki.

This collection of names may seem motley and more than a little confusing, with so many names seemingly originating from mainland Peven and Mathacaer but others more reminiscent of the Ma'atuuq. This is due to the massive influx of Mathacaeri and Taralbian sailors following the discovery of gargantuan schools of fish and pods of whales off the coast of Korriven.
Culture
Art & Architecture
Korriv architecture is certainly distinctive, as it is constructed almost entirely of salvaged material, especially from Ezrennaki whaling ships hauled up on shore. The Korriv people use the planks of ships to build smaller dwellings, and simply haul together ships in order to build larger palaces or fortresses.
