|| Trivet Heights

Overview

Trivet Heights occupies the elevated southwestern rise above Cabinet, offering clean air, sunlight, and panoramic views of the smoky city below. Established as a prestigious residential suburb, it houses Cabinet’s wealthiest industrialists, mine-owners, physicians, and academic elite. Broad, winding avenues lead past detached villas, orchards, and landscaped gardens—markedly removed from the congestion and grime of the industrial core.   Chivelley College and the botanical garden lend an air of cultivated refinement. Infrastructure is well-developed: cobbled roads, gas lamps, and privately maintained water systems. The district is devoid of heavy industry, and vice is outwardly suppressed—though discreet opium use is quietly tolerated behind the shutters of respectable homes. Trivet Heights exemplifies the spatial separation of class in Cabinet, a haven for wealth and influence positioned quite literally above the working masses.   Due to the property-owners here frequently being elected to the Improvement Commission, Trivet Heights is disproportionately favored in infrastructural and quality-of-life policies. It is often the first to receive new amenities and ameliorated conditions (with Broomvale being second). This is an example of the Matthew effect, a pattern of accumulated advantage.

District Profile

Location
On the high ground southwest of the river. This district crowns a sunny, south-facing slope overlooking the city.
  Land Use
Wealthy residential suburb. Large private estates, villas and cottages dot this well-ventilated terrain. A private school and botanical garden have been established to the east.
  Socioeconomic Profile
Upper-middle and upper class. Leading industrialists, mine-owners and professionals built mansions and spacious villas here. Clergy and professors also reside in the tony area.
  Built Environment
Broad avenues and winding lanes. Ornate stone and brick villas (often with gardens and orchards) line the streets. Some gentlemen’s villas have walled lawns and aviaries. The Chivelley College and botanical gardens contribute to the “very pleasant residential” character of the area. Houses are detached or pair-terraced, with multiple rooms and outhouses. Built-up density is low, and vistas of the city valley are common.
  Infrastructure
Plenty of cobblestone roads (some privately maintained), gas streetlamps, and private wells. The new railway does not penetrate the Heights directly, but a nearby country road leads to a small suburban station. A local church and a social club (gents only) serve the community.
  Key Industries
None on-site. This is purely residential. Some homeowners run home-based studies or map-rooms (amateur geology collections from local mines).
  Vice Economy
Negligible. Pubs exist only as exclusive hotels. Virtue and sobriety are expected. The area is famed for its orderly domestic life and charitable societies. Chivelley College here on the Heights reflects the philanthropic investment in housing for the upper classes. However, who knows if that's really true? Many of the elites use opium tincture or pipe in private, behind shutters.
  Historical Note
As contemporaries observed, the city’s prosperous men tended to build their large houses on such higher, south-facing slopes, exactly as seen here.

The Tour Of Cabinet

Tue, May 20th 2025 08:17
Did you know the Stokers call their operations "Tours" in homage to the late St. Berengar? Whether you're an amateur cabinetographer or touristy chatter, this is the place to document and discuss Cabinet’s crumbling cutlery halls, soot-choked parks, crooked rowhouses, and blood-damp back alleys.
Share detailed reports of locations you've encountered in your chatbot conversations—your posts can help others chart richer, more atmospheric paths through Cabinet’s class-wracked underworld. If your setting fits the lore, it may even be inducted into canon!
