|| Scranfield Commons

Overview

Scranfield Commons lies south of Cabinet, marking the city’s rural fringe where fields meet hills. Its landscape blends farmland, scattered woodland, and modest hamlets, with stone cottages, smallholdings, and streams shaping a patchwork of low-density settlement. It is semi-rural and historically grounded, home to both long-rooted peasant families and modern laborers such as quarrymen and railway workers.   Industry here is light and artisanal—water-powered mills in side valleys produce tools and blades, gritstone is quarried locally, and a few cottages take in textile bleaching or home-based craftwork. Scranfield Commons has industries in cabinet-making and funeral joinery due to timber cutting, drying, and basic carpentry in light artisanal contexts. The small chapel employs a sexton for undertaking, so corpses can be transported by hand-cart or horse-cart to Scranfield from Cabinet. Placing bone and carcass materials for bone-boiling, glue rendering, tallow-chandling and soap boiling here near water systems also helps carry the offensive odors downwind and downriver.   The commons are loosely linked by dirt tracks, wooden bridges, and a recently built rail spur connecting to the city. Community life centers around St. Mary’s Church and a solitary roadside inn, where most vice is limited to drinking and the occasional outsider’s disruption.

District Profile

Location
South of the river and city, at the foot of the rolling hills toward the countryside. Encompasses fields, woods, and a few hamlets.
  Land Use
Semi-rural and mixed. Parts remain farmland and commons; other parts have small hamlets of cottages and specialist workshops. It is not densely built.
  Socioeconomic Profile
Mixed laborers, artisans and farmers. Some enduring peasant families share land with railway workers and quarrymen. Wages are irregular; many supplement income by home crafts.
  Built Environment
Scattered stone cottages and farmsteads amidst fields. A few larger stone-built water-mill complexes (for grinding corn or finishing tool handles) are powered by the hill streams. There are no long terraced streets; instead, there is a ring of small hamlets. A modest toll-cottage on the old Turnpike marks the entry to Cabinet. Wooden footbridges cross streams.
  Infrastructure
A country church (St. Mary) serves villagers. Dirt lanes and newly made rail spur (to serve local quarries) connect to the main line. At night, only kerosene lamps light the bigger cottages.
  Key Industries
Some water-powered blade and tool workshops still operate in the side valley here, following old traditions. Small quarries supply gritstone; a smithy or two for horses. There is a small bleachery for cotton cloth. In general, industry is low-key and artisanal.
  Vice Economy
Very limited. Ale consumption is mainly home-brewed beer. There is one public house at the crossroads, but it functions largely as a community inn rather than a den of vice. Occasionally traveling salesmen gamble or stir trouble, but lawlessness is rare compared to the city.
