|| Kelvin Island
Overview
Kelvin Island is an industrial enclave in Cabinet’s northeast, formed by a river meander and a parallel canal branch, effectively isolating it from the rest of the city. It is the core of Cabinet’s heavy manufacturing, dominated by vast brick mills, crucible-steel works, steam-powered rolling mills, and forging shops that supply rails, plates, and heavy cutlery to national and export markets. Multi-storey factories with towering chimneys crowd the riverbanks, their noise and smoke constant.
Workers—mostly steelmen, grinders, and furnace crews—live in cramped two-room cottages and company lodging houses packed into dark alleys behind the works. A rail spur and canal wharfs serve the transport of steel and machinery, and cranes dominate the skyline. There are no parks, no civic amenities—only fire, iron, and exhaustion. The vice economy thrives: taverns and beerhouses overflow after shifts, gambling and knife-fights erupt in the alleys, and transients drift in and out of temporary labor.

Location
Low-lying land in the northeast, on a meander of the river. It is effectively an “island” bounded by the river channel and a parallel canal branch. A new railway goods yard sits on its edge.
Land Use
Intensely industrial. This is Cabinet’s heavy-manufacturing heart. Enormous multi-storey factories, steelworks and rolling mills line the riverbanks. Socioeconomic Profile
Nearly all residents are working-class laborers or skilled craftsmen (steelworkers, grinders, furnace men). Very few middle-class homes exist; many men live in company dormitories or cheap lodgings.
Built Environment
Massive brick mills with rows of tall arched windows and dozens of chimneys dominate. Steam engines and water-wheels power hammers and grinders. Adjoining these mills are maze-like alleys of back-to-back two-room cottages and lodging houses for workers. As the city historian notes, new “massive works” (steam rolling mills and foundries) were built on the flat valley lands here near the canal and railway lines. Housing is grim: tightly packed with little light or ventilation. Infrastructure
Cranes and wharfs along the canal allow loading of heavy rails and steel ingots onto barges. A small rail spur links the works to the mainline. The Kelvin Island Bridge crosses over atop Kelvin Island, leading to Burnside's outskirts. No parks or public squares exist.
Key Industries
Steel manufacturing and heavy forging. Numerous crucible-steel furnaces, steam-powered rolling mills and giant drop-forges churn out rails, bars and plate. Grinding-shops are prolific, and the dust from blade-and file-grinding is notoriously unhealthy. A few large cutlery factories (shears, scythes) are here too. This district is Cabinet’s crucible steel and armour-plate region.
Vice Economy
Many rough taverns and beerhouses for the workmen. Beer and spirits are consumed copiously after shifts. Gambling and knife-fights sometimes flare up in the narrow alleys. Crime is relatively high among transients and day laborers.

Did you know the Stokers call their operations "Tours" in homage to the late St. Berengar? Whether you're an amateur cabinetographer or touristy chatter, this is the place to document and discuss Cabinet’s crumbling cutlery halls, soot-choked parks, crooked rowhouses, and blood-damp back alleys.
