|| Hyrdinden og Skorstensfejeren Fairy-Tale

Overview

Hyrdinden og Skorstensfejeren ("The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep") is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen that centers on two porcelain figurines—an elegant shepherdess and a chimney sweep—who fall in love while living atop a parlor table. They are threatened with separation when a grotesque, goat-legged wooden figure carved into an old chest, named General-Headquarters-Hindquarters-Gives-Orders-Front-and-Rear-Sergeant-Billygoat-Legs, demands to marry the shepherdess. An authoritarian porcelain Chinaman, who claims to be her grandfather, gives his consent, prompting the couple to flee.   The two figurines escape their static world by climbing down the furniture and attempting to venture into the vast unknown via the chimney. They encounter resistance: animated objects, threatening figurines, and the emotional and physical challenge of navigating an unfamiliar world. Though initially determined, the shepherdess becomes overwhelmed by the magnitude of the real world and begs to return to their old place. The chimney sweep reluctantly agrees. Upon their return, they find that the Chinaman has fallen and broken during his attempt to chase them. Repaired but permanently damaged, the Chinaman loses the ability to nod—his former method of asserting control. This mechanical disablement grants the couple their freedom, allowing them to remain together on the table undisturbed.
