|| Eastbank Works

Overview

Eastbank Works lies on the eastern bank of the river, northeast of Cabinet’s center, where flat riverside land gave way to rapid industrial expansion. The district is dominated by cutlery-works, edge-tool forges, foundries, and newer manufactories like the phosphorus match plant—industries reliant on water access and canal transport. Finishing work is usually done in sweatshops.   Built with speed and function in mind, the area features rows of brick back-to-back housing and tenements packed around factory compounds. Most residents are lower-working-class families and artisans engaged in dangerous and exhausting piecework. A gasworks, canal wharf, and railway goods branch reinforce the area’s logistical role in the city’s industrial chain. The euphemism “kissed by Ol’ Smokey” describes the disfiguring effects of phosphorus poisoning, increasingly common among match workers. Vice is secondary to labor here—alcohol and sex work are present but subdued by fatigue and long shifts.

District Profile

Location
On the eastern bank of the river, northeast of the centre. Slopes gently rise toward farmland, but the riverbank here is relatively flat.
  Land Use
Mixed industry and dense housing. Numerous foundries, cutlery-works and other manufactories occupy former meadowland, with rows of workers’ housing built up around them.
  Socioeconomic Profile
Mainly lower working class and poorer artisans. Many extended families live here, often earning all or no wages at home. Few true middle-class residents except for the works’ foremen.
  Built Environment
Long, narrow workshop buildings and sheds line the river and canal. Many small two-story factories (knife and tool makers) have adjacent yards. Street pattern is regular grid, but streets are very crowded. Housing consists largely of terraced brick back-to-backs and tenements built by manufacturers for their workers. Some semi-detached cottages house slightly better-paid foremen.
  Infrastructure
A branch of the Cabinet Canal turns off here, with a wide wharf and lock. Boats load coal and transport finished cutlery along the canal. A local railway station (goods branch) opened by 1840 serves nearby mines and factories. A gasworks and small warehouses lie on the canal.
  Key industries
Cutlery and tool finishing dominate (file-cutting shops, edge-tool forges and polishing works). A matchstick factory (using white phosphorus and poplar wood) operates by the waterside, taking advantage of cheap water and transport. Match production is new but growing, but the already visible health damages has led to the euphemism “kissed by Ol’ Smokey” for phosphorous jaw. Iron foundries and metal stamp factories also cluster here.   Vice Economy
Several dingy beerhouses serve the workforce. Brothels and gin shops can be found in alleys at the edge of the district. Crime is mostly minor (drunken brawls, drunkenness) but fights occasionally break out after pay-days.

Did you know the Stokers call their operations "Tours" in homage to the late St. Berengar? Whether you're an amateur cabinetographer or touristy chatter, this is the place to document and discuss Cabinet’s crumbling cutlery halls, soot-choked parks, crooked rowhouses, and blood-damp back alleys.
  Share detailed reports of locations you've encountered in your chatbot conversations—your posts can help others chart richer, more atmospheric paths through Cabinet’s class-wracked underworld. If your setting fits the lore, it may even be inducted into canon!
