Scoundrel's Bitter Revenge is a former pirate ship whose wreckage remains in its final resting place on the
Canter Sea, somewhere between
Hildemar and
Serengeti. The skeletal remains of its crew, known collectively as the Sea Scoundrels, also rest in its watery grave, believed to have perished in the fateful attack that ended the ship's career once and for all.
So the Story Goes...
Little is known for certain about the ship's former captain, a human named Eugene Widrik, or about his childhood. In life, he was a private man, notorious for his paranoia. Like many other great pirate captains, however, rumors abound and persist to this very day.
According to legend, Eugene was familiar with seafaring life even as a child. He is said to have spent a significant portion of his childhood on a fishing vessel, where he kept the topdeck tidy for his father - a merchant and fisherman. It is said that some time in his adolescence, the vessel was trapped in a rough storm, one that rattled even the experienced crew. Lost at sea, when it finally returned to port long after schedule, a full third of its occupants were missing, including Eugene.
Having been knocked overboard by the violent waves along with several others, his father believed that he had perished in the ocean. However, according to the story, he didn't die at all. Instead, the boy clung desperately to life until finally washing up on the shore of
Hag Island. Several other men landed ashore with him, but those who weren't already dead had a much more gruesome fate in store. Found by a supposed coven of hags, the sailors who managed to survive the harrowing ordeal were torn apart and eaten - all except for Eugene.
They say that in return for grueling work and servitude, his life was spared by the hag sisters. He spent the rest of his adolescence under their command, until he was old and strong enough to set sail on his own. When he did, his seemingly natural talent and knowledge of the sea quickly landed him a job as a sailor in the military, where he rose through the ranks with relative ease. It was there that rumors regarding his background began to emerge. Once he was promoted to admiral rank, he stole one of the retired military ships and took off with a crew of his own.
It wasn't long before he made himself known on the sea, along with an ever-changing cast of outlaws. It was due to this, along with his unnaturally good fortune, that caused others to attribute his success to the hags that raised him. Many believed that the piracy was just a front - a new form of servitude, a way to provide goods and nourishment to the hags in the name of his life's debt. Others believe that he was trying to run as far away from them as possible, usually just one step ahead of them, as tragedy always befell shortly after a visit from the Scoundrel's Bitter Revenge.
If there was one thng most could agree on, its that Eugene Widrik and his final crew all met their fate at the hands of the very hags that raised him. The why is less clear; had he broken a promise or otherwise invoked the coven's wrath, or did they simply get bored and decide to eat him anyway? Some theorize that it was the sisters' plan all along - to send him out into the world so he could bring back a hearty feast and a ship full of treasures. Still others think that he was a sacrifice, or a pawn in a much bigger plot.
Regardless of the truth, the vessel had sailed its last time before sinking beneath the blue sea surface, dead either from the interference from the wicked beings or the wrath of mother nature herself.
