Liberator Class Assault Carrier
The Liberator class in many ways justifies the original concept of the Leviathan Class Fleetship. Having encountered Monsos assault carriers during the Monsos War, the Imperium realized it needed a similar fast attack superheavy ship. During the design process, the Remian Republic seceded from the Imperium, claiming nearly half of Imperial territory. Grand Admiral Anthony Adex, defecting to the Remian Republic in protest of the bombing of civilian targets, quickly realized that the desired assault carrier already existed.
Thomason Shipbuilding had defied the orders of Claudius II and built ten of the originally proposed design for the Leviathan under the code name “Project Sailfish,” ostensibly as star liners. The ships were hastily upgraded with the latest weapons from the Monsos War and redesignated the Liberator class, entering the war on the side of the Remian Republic late in the war.
Following the war and recognition of the Remian Republic, the Terran Imperium would abandon its own project and instead commission Liberator class ships from the Republic. Further redesign and refinement would see a better balance between the cruiser, carrier, and capital ship roles an assault carrier was intended to fill. The ships would receive many upgrades and remain in construction until the end of the First Enmalex War.
