Temar
Temar lies on the very farthest reach of Terran Space, accessible only via the Rinzian Jump Point. A frozen world, Temar was quickly abandoned by most corps mid-terraform when The Wheel was being built. Though Temar is still part of Terran Systems, it relies mostly on its own resources to keep its inhabitants alive. When Terraforming was halted, the percentage of oxygen in the Temarian air was still low compared to Earth (approximately 12% vs. 20%). This means most Terrans visiting the planet require an oxygen source to breathe.
Two distinct Terran offshoots exist on Temar - the Temari and the BiLess. While they both arrived on the same initial vessels, and do often interact, the cultures have split significantly in the past 200 years, creating a unique political situation.
The Temari are the official Systems operatives in the system. Still, the dominant feeling on Temar is one of minimal oversight. Added to this is the inhospitable climate. While Temari can live indefinitely on the surface, off-worlders quickly tire of breathing apparatuses, and generally work to minimize contact. Having been abandoned by most Terran corps means morale on Temar is among the lowest of all the Colonies. In fact, the Temari are often on the front lines of initiatives to secede from Terran Systems, although most of the populace know this is a sure way to invite new hostilities. Due to their close affiliation with the planet Rinz (planet) and its own similar history of broken promises, many Temari and Rinzians feel like kindred spirits, and they are often seen collaborating on projects in virtual environments where atmosphere is a non-issue.
History
The original colonists of Temar quickly found ways to engineer their own survival, primarily by a planet-wide genetic modification initiative. Over time, differences arose between the cultures of the adapted Temari and the Bubble Colony Terrans or BiLess, and conflicts began. Systems authorities on the Wheel determined that the Temari modifications had violated their terms of service with the corporation. This left all essential colony tasks to the BiLess, and a huge majority of colonists unemployed. With the Temari unable to perform work, they quickly became a drain. The BiLess launched a campaign to drive all Temari out of the colonies - in many cases, with violence. After many deaths within the bubbles, the surface Temari came together to attack and destroy the environmental shielding of 4 out of 5 Bubble colonies. Those BiLess who didn't make it to escape craft or suits in time perished, and the Temari succeeded in clustering the Bi-Less into Colony 5 - the last dome that went undisturbed. While a few Temari remained in Colony 5, it was ceded to the BiLess in the truce that was reached. To this day, The Temari scramble all communications between Colony 5 and Systems, effectively isolating them from their former employers and leaving them to survive by their own devices. Communication, trade, and diplomacy is still active between the BiLess and all other visitors to Temar. Now, all interaction between Temari and Systems are often tense negotiations for resources. This tension increased two years ago, when Systems sent another Capital ship to Temar, raising hopes of a renewed interest in the planet, only to send it into sub-warp towards uncolonized star Nifall, in an attempt to find a less costly planet to terraform in that system. Although many consider Temar a lost cause, some Terrans hold out hope that the Temari and the BiLess will one day be able to reunite, or at a minimum, finish terraforming Temar.Geography
Temar is mountainous and mineral rich, sporting massive veins of iron, precious metals and uranium, all of which was an initial draw for Systems and other corps to colonize. However, despite this, it was still not enough to compare with the potential of the Triptych and The Wheel, and its distance (three jump points from Sol) made trade cumbersome. Most of Temar’s surface is covered by frozen lakes, which Terran Systems and others have drilled into and populated with a variety of re-engineered Terran ocean creatures, as an early effort to terraform the planet from the oceans out.
Fauna & Flora
While surface-dwelling animal life is scarce, Terran wildlife thrives under the seas. All manner of sea life that used to exist on Earth now exists on Temar, with minor genetic alterations to allow for a higher ratio of nitrogen consumption. Much of this is due to genetic infusion from Progenature, Inc., which happens to be headquartered on Temar. Many scientific studies are done of the adaptation of life to the conditions on Temar. Progenature is working to adapt wildlife to surface conditions as well, and several smaller mammals are starting to be found.
