Lemon Clean

Fukelfech hefted his large pack and strode down the busy dock towards the Wavekicker, a two-masted ship he had signed onto just last night. As he neared it, the wind shifted, blowing across the vessel right to his nostrils. Mixed with the scent of the sea was a strong aroma of lemon.   He paused, his hooves going still as his nostrils drank in that refreshing scent. Fukelfech's mouth curved into a short smile as he realized the lemon scent was not from fresh-made juice or a load of lemons. Rather, it was from a lemon-scented soap that the Bremaur used to clean their sailing ships. His smile spread into a grin. Not only did the lemon scent declare the Wavekicker a well-mantained ship, but one that was just cleaned, a chore every new sailor was given. No one loved swabbing decks, and he would get to avoid that bit.   Fukelfech continued walking, letting his hooves hit the dock with jaunty thuds. Pride in his kinfolk surged through him. Lemon soap did more than clean the wooden planks; it prevented magical effects from affecting the wood.   He drew in a deep sniff, savoring the lemon soap scent. Never again would he work aboard a non-Bremaur ship.
Lemon Soap is fairly new, having been created within the past handful of years by the Bremaur priests of T'Ar, the god of science.   This includes alchemy. Bremaur, despite their size, need far fewer citrus fruits to prevent scurvy than other folks.   This has allowed them to use lemons in other ways.   It is the other ingredients that, when mixed with lemon oil, provide the magical protection for wood.
What those ingredients are is a well-protected secret.   This protection will prevent spells that fling damaging energies like fire and lightning from harming wood.   It will not prevent alchemies or normal sources from dealing harm.   This protection wears off overtime requiring a ship to be scrubbed down every three months.
Bremaur are immune to magic, good and bad, but their ships were not.   Hitting Bremaur with a fireball does no damage to them, but will ignite other things. creating a natural fire, which can then hurt the Bremaur.   Their priests are true scholars dedicated to finding ways for the Bremaur to advance against magic with science.   Alchemy is their strongest field of study thus far, and their Lemon Soap is proving to be a significant advantage against those who have ship mages.   A ship's mage is lighter than a ship's armament, allowing the ship to carry more cargo weight and/or sail faster.   They are also cheaper to maintain with a salary or loot-share.   Many ships often have more than one mage and even clerics.   The Bremaur prefer armaments and are determined to make that a distinct advantage, starting with Lemon Soap.
