Black Rain, Part 3
General Summary
While clearing the rest of Bahamut's temple of its invaders, the party stumbled upon the dragonborn templar Rhyaex'laraek (Meat-Cleaver in Draconic), who was valiantly defending the barracks before he was cut nearly in twain by a bloodtroll champion. They did manage to save the cleric Ester Falinesh, whom the High Priest charged with restoring the cathedral to its former glory. As thanks for the party saving her life and defending the sanctuary of Bahamut, she granted them the weapons and armor of the slain, as well as free healing.
Anwae Mavin, Sister of Essembra, agreed to stay in Pandora and help on two conditions: First, that Emperor Covak address his people who were hiding from the Black Rain inside the palace, to which Covak readily agreed, and began the process of rebuilding and even finishing old architecture (roads). Secondly, Anwae made the party swear upon the sword of her grandmother that they would destroy the Iron Rods. Doing so would undoubtedly destroy the red dome above the cathedral, but Tiff wanted to be sure and spend the day researching libraries while Grud slept and Rico burned the foul things they'd slain. However, the smoke from the fire caused the air to choke, and Tiff had to use magic to settle it as ash over the temple.
Grud recognized some similarities between the Iron Rods and the Imaskarcana, and Tiff was able to confirm it: These were indeed the Sixth Imaskarcana, and held the secrets of ancient Imaskar's interplanar slaving network. Due to the nature of the knowledge, and the Rods' use, together they were unmistakeably artifacts of great evil.
Anwae swore the party to destroy and to never use them, and though Tiff hesitated, she eventually agreed for the sake of her Bahamut-worshipping husband, Rico. Grud accepted his share of the loot and departed, and told the Emperor that he expected the emperor to return the favor in the future.
Investigating the Hall of Saints, they found the final resting place of Darastrix Levethix, a dragonborn mage who slew Ozymandius, the last wielder of the Iron Rods, over 2,000 years ago. Anwae suggested they travel to Elysium to seek the advice of this hero, but Tiff cast Mordenkainen's disjunction upon the artifacts, and was able to destroy one of the rods on her own, and retain her spellcasting. Such destruction would have undoubtedly drawn the attention of Imaskar's gods, had they any. The second rod remained, however, and the party decided to embark upon a great quest to destroy the artifact so that the followers of the Nemesis, the evil dragon goddess Tiamat, might never again use them again in the Dragonfall War.
After accepting the quest, Rico requested the Sister's help in becoming a dragonborn himself, and she wholeheartedly agreed. He meditated upon his life, fasting for a full day, before constructing his symbolic shell in the Rite of Rebirth. He then slept for another day, receiving a vision from dragonborn saints who offered him Bahamut's heart, breath, or wings. Rico chose wings, and upon hatching from the shell a day later, discovered that he had become a dragonborn of X color. He then chose his new name in Draconic: X.
