Kohl the Kind

Summary

During The Rebellion of King Tyre there arose a warrior within the ranks of the Rexiot soldiers. This soldier came to be known as "the Kind" for his acts on the battlefield. Serving his King Maffeo Rex with supreme loyalty he led many successful assaults against the Rebels cities and defensive formations. Every time the enemy surrendered he ensure the wounded were cared for and the captured were treated with dignity. Quickly rising to prominence for his battlefield expertise, opposing forces would simply surrender before attacking to ensure that their lives were spared. As the rebellion was extinguished the King offered Kohl the choice to serve as his personal bodyguard. After the war ended Kohl decided instead to set off on his own to explore the world leaving the king this prediction as his parting words.
I will return to the Kingdom when it needs me most. Not a moment before or after.

Historical Basis

The vast majority of the people of the Rex Kingdom believe that every detail told to them by their King is complete fact. They have completely accepted the King's explanation of the events of the rebellion and that Kohl was so majestic that opposing armies simply wilted before him.

Historical fact

As recorded by Grand Archivist Beckett in a missive to King Stoldo Rex.
-My king after researching the historical data that exists from the rebellion I have come to the conclusion that "Kohl the Kind" was not very kind at all. He possessed unbelievable martial skill, still probably unmatched by all but our finest officers to this day. He demolished two armies completely and simply chose not to execute the rebels who survived the initial battle. Those he spared were pressed into service and repaired his soldier's armor, weapons, and helped provide supplies to them. It seems that he treated these prisoners kindly but only if they carried their burden to his satisfaction. If not they were mercilessly abandoned somewhere in the wilderness. King Maffeo Rex is the one who started his legend and used it to inspire the Rexiot people as opposed to demoralize the rebelling Sparsien tribes. However, I did find that there is a lot of truth to what the told the King about him returning. In the History of Humanity Library there is a deed written by King Maffeo Rex granting someone by the name of Kohl Rurrel a large amount of land on the southern shore of the Kingdom. I was unable to find any evidence of Kohl still inhabiting the Rex Kingdom lands but I did stumble across a couple merchants who had definitely heard of a legendary warrior who was training disciples in the mountains between our nation and the Free State Alliance. It could be worth sending an expedition there my lord.

Spread

Almost every Rexiot has heard the stories of Kohl the Kind. The actual acts he performs during the battles of The Rebellion of King Tyre vary from region to region but for the most part, his achievements and accomplishments have inspired an entire generation of soldiers. Outside of the Rex Kingdom explorers have reported hearing stories and whispers of a mysterious human who seeks out skilled warriors and either trains them or learns their unique fighting style. King Stoldo Rex is convinced that somehow Kohl still lives and he has invested considerable funds into trying to find the legendary human warrior.

Variations & Mutation

Though the main plot points that King Maffeo Rex shared with his people upon the end of The Rebellion of King Tyre have remained constant the minor details vary amongst the Rexiot people.

Earite

Believing that Kohl was a chosen of the King they have elevated the warrior from a tremendously skilled warrior into a demi-god. In the same way that King Pippo Rex and Queen Cristina Rex define large portions of the young empires ideals Kohl is the warrior that dozens of children aspire to replicate. The legend in the city of Earth is one of masterful sword skill, compassion to the enemies of the Kingdom, and a brooding but humble man who diligently sought to serve his King. On the day that the rebel tribes surrendered the city hosts a festival where many children can be seen dressed as their warrior idol.

Sparsien

In the south, the scars from the rebellion have healed but have not disappeared. Kohl's name is one of mixed respect and disdain. The warrior aspect of him is respected and warriors invoke his name before battle as a homage to have his spirit within them. At the same time, he was viewed as a lapdog of the King of the country and nothing matters more to the Sparsien people than their freedom. Thus, just as there is a complicated relationship between the Kingdom and the southern Sparsien people there is a struggle over how to view the man who likely spelled the doom of their way of life. Kohl is regarded as a man who was twisted from his noble warrior origins to serve the vile throne of the Rex Kingdom. As the stories have evolved in the south a love interest who was Sparsien has entered the legend and serves as the narrator as they were the reason that Kohl decided not to serve the King.

Nunan

Here the story is much the same as it is in Earite culture with one major difference. Kohl was the founder of the Nunan people and his example is one they must all strive to replicate. Arguing that this is untrue is grounds for a fight with a Nunan as they are completely convinced that Kohl founded the first villages that they inhabited and their martial strength is a gift from him. Every year dozens of Nunans scour the countryside seeking any clues as to where their missing warrior king has disappeared to.

Cultural Reception

King Stoldo Rex continues to question ambassadors and diplomats about sightings or rumors about Kohl. Often his questioning will yield results with various nations all having some recollection of an extremely strong human warrior. Most regard him with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion but his whereabouts have changed so often that no nation has truly done anything about him. The most perplexing thing to the other races is how this human is still alive at all, as most are aware that humans do not have long lifespans.
