Meteor Attack

Background

The exact origin of the game isn't known, but it has been played within the P'Ache Star System since at least the Space Age. It is believed that for a couple of centuries around this time, there was a somewhat primitive fear and fascination with meteors. It's not quite clear why.

A Quick Glossary

Meteor - the person trying to catch everyone else   Spaceship - the people trying not to be caught   Prime - the starting point for the Spaceships   Planet - the target for the Spaceships (also the mid-point)   Debris - Spaceships caught by the Meteor

How To Play

The game is very simple. It can be played with as few as two people but is best played with 5 - 30 people.

Set Up

First, you choose a place to be Prime and another place, a good distance away from it, to be Planet.   Next, you choose the person who is going to be the Meteor. Everyone else starts the game as a Spaceship and stands in Prime.

Goal

Meteor

To turn all of the Spaceships into Debris.

Starships

To get from Prime to the Planet and back without being turned into Debris.

The Rules

This game can be played over multiple rounds. Each round, the following actions take place:
  1. The Meteor stands in the middle of the space between Prime and the Planet.
  2. The Meteor shouts "METEOR ATTACK!"
  3. All Spaceships must immediately leave Prime and start trying to reach the Planet.
  4. The Meteor tries to touch as many Spaceships as possible.
  5. Any Spaceships which are touched turn into Debris, which puts them on the side of the Meteor and in turn, try to touch as many Spaceships as they can on their way back to Prime.
  6. Any Spaceships which reach the Planet may stay inside the Planet for as long as they like and are considered safe from the Meteor or its Debris.
  7. Any Spaceships which make it all the way to the Planet and back to Prime without being touched by the Meteor or its Debris then it wins.
  8. The next round starts with all of the Debris becoming Meteors too, with the remaining Spaceships trying to repeat their mission back to the Planet.

Variations

Standard Variations

Handholding

In some versions of the game, the Debris joins hands with the Meteor, rather than returning to Prime, making it even more difficult for Spaceships to dodge them. The catch with this variation is that if the Meteor and the Debris release hands, anyone they touch doesn't count.

Tackling

The touching part of this game is arguably a new tradition. The "old rules" version of this game states that the Meteor has to tackle the Spaceships to the ground in order to turn them into Debris. It is considered poor form to tackle them from behind.

Immunity

There are several variations when relating to the immunity from being touched by the Meteor. One is that the Meteor cannot touch you when any part of you is touching the area considered safe, either Prime or the Planet. Others argue that Prime is the only truly safe space.
There are a couple of more local variations relating to how far the Meteor has to be from Prime before starting the round, and whether Spaceships are allowed to turn back on themselves.

Macran Variations

There is a very old version of this game, which was played on P'Ache Micro between The First Micro Rebellion and The Second Micro Rebellion. In this version, the Spaceships are called "people", and the Meteor is called "the Primian". They followed the handholding rule as a sign of people being taken under the control of the Primian.   This was officially banned on P'Ache Micro in 310 PT by the Primians who declared it "too violent".
