Personal history
Canary grew up in and around The Chain, the irradiated section of the Lake of the Ozarks. At this time we has still human, but was born into a social class called the Canaries. This class of people never received names, and tended to not live beyond thirty, whether due to the danger of their work or radiation poisoning. They were forced to venture out onto the irradiated lakes to catch softshell mirelurks and giant catfish--a major export of the region and the only reason many other places do business with those in The Chain. The children of this social class were used as bait and would need to swim in the water while attached to ropes. Adults would then pull them in upon luring a creature, ideally without the child being harmed. This rarely worked out this way, with many losing life and limb, although Canary would be one of the lucky ones.
Tired with the mistreatment that came with being a Canary, and beginning to experience ghoulification, Canary fled The Chain. He ventured East at first, where he came upon Eureka Gulch. The Ghouls there understood what was happening to him and helped him along in the ghoulification process. Despite their kindness, they could not erase the damage that had been done to him in childhood, or the physical scars of radiation left behind. Still, he would keep the name of Canary, never feeling that a new title fit him.
