The Flaming Maw

Geography

The Flaming Maw is a massive volcano located on an island just off the coast of northern Malquos near the Basalt Citadel where the magma dwarves still live. The opening of the volcano resembles the fanged mouth of a dragon giving it its name. Due to the intense heat it emits, despite the northern location of the Flaming Maw, no snow is ever found on the island and even rain struggles to linger.

Ecosystem Cycles

Every 15 to 20 years, the amount of liquid hellfire leaching into the volcano reaches a tipping point and causes earthquakes that can be felt across the mountain ranges of Malquos and disturb the inhabitants of those living on other continents. However, settlements to the south of Malquos are often undisturbed by the earthquakes beyond an ominous feeling and the sound of faraway thunder. This is believed to be due to the Ancients of the world attempting to right the balance and protect the descendants of their Children.

Localized Phenomena

Within the Flaming Maw is a remnant of the Undoing. A burning portal that Grüghil Magmabane himself pulled closed until all that could escape was a trickle of liquid hellfire from 4th Sector. This liquid hellfire is highly prized in magma dwarf forging, allowing them to work with metals with the highest melting points with ease. The liquid hellfire runs in a small river from the ledge the portal sits on down into the depths of the volcano and can cause earthquakes from time to time.

Fauna & Flora

Very little is able to survive around the Flaming Maw, however, Ember Blooms are famous for their ability to grow only under the most hot and extreme conditions with sap of the ember bloom being highly prized for its magical properties.

History

The Flaming Maw is famous for being one of the invasion points during the Sectors' attack during the Undoing. It was from here that demons and infernal beasts from the 4th Sector launched their attack on Oxerune and laid siege to the dwarves in their Citadel. It wasn't until Grüghil Magmabane sacrificed himself to defeat the hellbeasts and ascended to godhood was the portal able to be diminished to a point of relative harmlessness. However, these events led to some dwarves fearing being sieged and thus endlessly wandering, and others being distrustful of any traces of the demons' presence. These two groups would eventually become the wandering dwarves and mountain dwarves, while those who stayed and used the hellfire became known as magma dwarves.
