Song of Planting

With seeds in hand and one in the ground, we bless this land that we have found. The Sun above and Terra below, in this earth these seeds we sow.
— A chant sung while planting the first seeds of the year.

History

The Song of Planting is a work song that can be traced back to the Era of Creation when the world was new. What began as a prayer to the Ancients became a ritual to bless the coming harvests and help the work go faster. The Undoing nearly wiped out many ancient traditions and rituals, but through people like Lakionma and those with a vested interest in the preservation of knowledge, they survived. This is one such ritual and is often used even now. The first verse is typically the same, but the rest varies depending on the area and who's singing. The improvisation of verses is as much a part of the song as the verse that is the same.

From Prayer to Ritual

Going from prayer to ritual is not a small matter, and not just anything can come to hold such power. In the beginning the Song of Planting was a prayer to the Ancients to bless crops and encourage growth. As time went on, the Ancients' power started to be coaxed forth by just the song and the people's belief that it would work. During the Undoing the magic was nearly wiped out as focus turned to survival and agriculture was abandoned with people constantly on the move running from the invading forces of the Sectors. Thanks to scholars who fought to preserve knowledge even amidst the tragedy, and the farmers who held onto the hope that they could one day return to their farms, the Song of Planting endured to the current age. Now in the Era of Renewal, the magic of the Ancients and the new deities permeates the world and the belief of the farmers gives power to the song. The repetitive motions of planting the first seeds, the chant of the Song of Planting, and the farmers' belief in the cycle of the earth and their song give the chant its power.
