Unlocking Potential

  Magical essences are mystical objects imbued with potent ambient magical energy, believed to grant supernatural abilities to individuals upon absorption. These enigmatic artifacts have been the subject of fascination and speculation among practitioners of the arcane arts for centuries.  

Origins and History

  The origins of magical essences are shrouded in mystery and legend. Some ancient texts suggest that they were created by sacrificial rituals or divine beings as gifts to mortals. Others believe that they are natural manifestations of ambient magic, coalesced into tangible form over millennia.   Throughout history, tales of heroic individuals harnessing the power of magical essences have been passed down through folklore and myth. In some cultures, these objects are revered as sacred relics, sought after by those who seek to unlock their hidden potential. Through their widespread cultivation and use, essences have become widely accepted as highly desired rare objects that can elevate one's standing. They are viewed as a necessity for anyone hoping to join the ranks of the Adventurer Society or Magic Society.  

Characteristics and Properties

  Magical essences come in a single form. A roughly fist-sized cube, with its appearance varying on the imbued magical properties held within. What sets them apart from ordinary objects is their innate connection to the mystical energies that permeate the universe.     Each magical essence is said to possess unique properties and abilities, reflecting the nature of the magic infused within it. Some may grant the power of elemental manipulation, control over the intangible, and even conjuration powers. Others may bestow physical capabilites such as enhanced strength, agility, or heightened senses to those who absorb their energy.   The potency of a magical essence can vary widely, with some providing only minor enhancements while others grant near-limitless power. Each ability granted by an essence has the capacity to grow in utilization and power, with no one ability being stronger than another. However, with great power comes great risk, as the uncontrolled use of these abilities can have dire consequences that are not yet fully understood.  

Acquisition and Utilization

  Obtaining a magical essence is no easy task, as they are often hidden away in remote locations, guarded by powerful magical entities, or at the epicenter of deadly environments. Many hopeful adventurers embark on perilous quests in search of these elusive artifacts, facing challenges and dangers beyond imagination. However, in rare occasions, essences can materialize in relative safety.
  Once acquired, the process of harnessing the power of a magical essence can be equally challenging. All require a ritualistic absorption, during which the essence of the object is transferred to the individual, granting them access to its magical abilities. However, the process is not without its risks, as the energies contained within the essence can be overwhelming to those unprepared for their power. The guidelines for essence-absorption are that the individual must be at least fifteen years of age, within good health, has not participated in ritual magic within the last seventy-two hours, and has not previously absorbed an essence of the same capabilities. Disregarding these suggested requirements can result in lasting debilitation and possibly death of either the ritual caster or essence-absorbing individual.  

Rule of Three

  Any individual is capable of absorbing a total of three essences. Upon doing so, a fourth, unique essence will be automatically acquired and absorbed. This foruth essence cannot be acquired through the standard means of discovery within the world. Upon absorbing this unique essence, an individual's body undegoes a dramatic change. The Magic Society attributes this change to the individual adapting to the vast amounts of magic now being stored and constrained within the body. Colloquially known as "the purge", the body will expunge lingering toxins, any current illnesses or disease, and even replace vital organs and bodily functions. After the body has fully adapted to these four essences, the individual acquires Iron rank, the irreversible first step in the process of the body becoming partially composed of magic instead of flesh and blood.    

Ethical Considerations

  The use of magical essences raises ethical questions about the responsibility handling of such powerful artifacts. Many argue that their indiscriminate use can lead to imbalance and chaos, as individuals vie for supremacy using their newfound abilities. As such, governing bodies over the use of essences were formed. The Adventurer Society, which offers services in the use of essences in the form of public bounties and issuing licenses to new magic users, and the Magic Society, which is an academic body that studies the various effects and combinations of essences, as well as offering rituals for essence absorption. Both factions play a pivotal role in protecting the common people, educating the masses in essence-use, and punishing those who willingly exploit their abilities with questionable intent.   Fringe groups believe that magical essences hold the key to unlocking the full potential of humanity, ushering in a new era of enlightenment and progress, no matter the cost or means. However, even they caution against the temptation to abuse power, emphasizing the importance of using magic sparingly and with purpose. Rampant magical use often draws the ire of powerful factions who employ experienced essence-users to track down any reprobate for punishment.  

Suppression

  While it is difficult to do so, it is not impossible to completely suppress an essence-user's abilities. A multitude of methods exist to muzzle essence abilities, though the most common are via a suppression collar or skeletal suppression. A suppression collar is a device that is carried by both Adventurer Society and Magic Society officials that must be placed around the neck of an individual and locked into place. Once locked, an essence-user will be unable to harness any magical abilities, including ritual magic.   In the most extreme cases, skeletal suppression is used. This process involves the carving of runes into the bones of an individual, permanently removing the individual's ability to harness magic. This punishment is normally reserved for those who have willingly taken an innocent life via the use of magic. Only select members of the Magic Society hold the knowledge of the required ritual and necessary runes to conduct skeletal suppression.
