FunGlow

At first glance this mushroom species appears to be similar to GloMoss, as it has a bioluminescent response to nearby magic. When directly touched by anyone actively using magic, however, it shows its true vicious nature by starting to actively consume the magic, causing it to glow extremely brightly. This also applies to anyone astrally passing through the FunGlow, who will find mushroom spores clinging to their astral shape and actively dining on them.   FunGlow's true nature is an expensive experiment attempting to ground FAB-III bacteria in a mushroom symbiosis. The mushrooms help keep the FAB-III alive even when not consuming any magical energy, while it also keeps the bacteria imprisoned. This way, theoretically there shouldn't be any accidental carrier incidents. An unfortunate side-effect is that the FAB-III is consistently starved this way, resulting in increased absorption rates.   Mechanically any active foci and spells will be drained of 1 Force per minute. Any magically active creatures, including spirits and physical adepts with active adept powers, will temporarily lose 1 Magic per 10 minutes of exposure. Their Magic will recover 1 point per hour afterwards. The spores must be washed off entirely to be safe.   FunGlow is only used in a few secure sites, preferably ones partially located underground where the entrances are too large to ward. The complete absence of wards, which would be consumed by the FunGlow, is a good indication for smart mages to be extremely wary of these locations. Fortunately its high upkeep, 1 dram of reagents per square meter per week, keeps it from being widely employed.

I really like the scientific twist to this article. I like that it was created as an experiment. :D

There's quite a few different Awakened plants that can be used as defensive mechanisms in Shadowrun, and I was all 'hm... How do I make those even more nasty...' and voila! To every Shadowrun GM, 'how do I stop spying mages and spirits from ruining my ambushes' is an important thing to think of. =D

Hm. I thought the terms looked so familiar. Shadowrun. Turned out very nice indeed. Yes, there's a science twist which is a nice twist, but what I find even more useful is the ability itself to stop magic users. That could be really, really useful sometimes. Even though I'm not the DM here, I only am in DnD ^^.

Yeah, it's meant as alternative to Wards, which are easily bypassed if you pay attention to them. No way to get properly past this sucker for an astral sneak!
