In the cities, honestly, vampires have mostly become just another threat. The only difference is they discriminate less. People pay more attention, well-trained police knows how to investigate, discoveries are dealt with swiftly. How different it is in small villages.
One would think social cohesion and remoteness would discourage vampires. And honestly, they do. But at the same time, lack of external contact can also turn a town into an easy feeding ground. Mayhaps worse, a wandering Fae could be offended and curse the place.
So people make do, make ways to welcome visitors while still staying safe. Barricadable homes, barred windows, master keys plated with blessed silver, loads of garlic, and a well-secured visitor house.
A visitor house normally has two entrances, so that a traveler can inspect without getting locked in. Any unlockable door will be rigged with alarm systems to rouse the entire village. Multiple rooms will all have additional security, so that guests and village are all protected against each other. Distrust is considered mandatory for all.
