Cave Fern
Cave Ferns are low-growing plants characterized by their delicate, lacy fronds. They are typically a deep green color, though some varieties may exhibit a slightly bluish or purplish tinge. The fronds are divided into many small, individual leaflets, giving them a feathery appearance. They rarely grow more than a few inches tall and often form dense mats on the surfaces where they grow.
Cave Ferns are found exclusively in dark, damp environments, primarily caves and underground tunnels. They thrive in areas with high humidity and constant moisture. They often grow near underground streams or pools of water, and their presence can sometimes indicate a source of fresh water nearby. They are particularly well-adapted to low-light conditions and cannot survive in direct sunlight. They often grow on rocky surfaces, damp earth, or even decaying wood within caves.
Cave Ferns have several uses. Their presence can be an indicator of potable water. While not typically eaten, they are sometimes used in herbal remedies for minor burns or skin irritations. More importantly, they are a key ingredient in certain magical potions. They are most commonly used in potions of darkvision, enhancing the drinker's ability to see in complete darkness. They are also sometimes used in potions of healing, as they are believed to possess some restorative properties.
