Ulasht, the Hate Seed
Part plant, part monster, and part pure anger, the creature that the Gruul Clans call Ulasht is a rare species of hydra, driven to the brink of extinction by the expansion of Ravinca's cityscape. One of only a handful remaining members of its kind, Ulasht is worshipped by the Gruul as a spiritual representation of their fight against Ravinca's societal systems, and their struggle to tear it down brick by brick.
Growth of Anger Thousands of years ago, before Ravinca's surface, was entirely covered by the city and the guilds still waged an endless war, hydras, even those like Ulasht, were much more common. Only in the past several millennia have their numbers dwindled to almost none, prompting the Simic to take notice, capturing those few remaining in the wild for breeding experiments meant to rekindle their population. Of the countable number of hydras still living in the wild, Ulasht is viewed by Gruul and Simic alike to be the greatest among them. Ulasht, for its part, views the Simic and the Gruul the same way it does every other living creature- with disgust and spite. In spite of its limited intelligence, Ulasht seems to know what the guilds have done to its kind over the years and doesn't take kindly to finding humanoids in its domains.
Source of Endless Anger For many centuries, Ulasht has been one of the greatest challenges to guilds like the Simic, Azorius, or Izzet, and works to expand and build society. Ravnica has never truly been fully modernized, in part because Ulasht exists, and prevents it from happening. Wherever Ulasht nests, buildings will fall, machinery will break, and nature will reclaim the area faster than it can be rebuilt.
This is because Ulasht is not a single hydra, living in one place. Ulasht itself is endless, a network of heads and necks, each connecting multiple bodies, which themselves connect to some hidden source miles below Rabinca's surface. When Ulshat is "killed", it's never really dead- just one piece of the massive whole has only temporarily been disabled.
