As you cast this spell, you toss the bones before you, and use the runes that appear to help foretell the future. When you cast this spell, roll 4d20 and record the result of each roll. Then, unless you cast this spell as a ritual, you take 2d12 necrotic damage as the spirits of the dead take their vengeance. Up to four times before the end of your next short or long rest, when you roll a d20 you can choose to replace the roll with one of the recorded rolls. You can do so after seeing the roll, but before you know the result.
