Horizon Chimera
Even on Theros, a world where the gods are the source of almost all magic and magical creatures, the source of the original chimeras is unclear. Some believe they were created by mad mages, given aberrant knowledge by Keranos or Kruphix as punishment for their transgressions. Others who know the secret histories of Theros believe they might be among the creatures crafted by the citizens of Olantis, the fallen polis of magic.
Whatever the source of their origins, over the centuries, the chimeras of Theros have become a fact of life, an enigmatic breed of creatures that serve to boggle the mind and capture imaginations. For those obsessed with cataloging the natural diversity of Theros, chimeras have become something of a holy grail, with dozens of different breeds established, and constantly more being found.
Mystery of Mysteries Even among the strange and indefinable chimera, the horizon chimera is a special case. Like others of its kind, the horizon chimera's body has the physical traits of several other creatures, jammed together in a way that makes little logical sense. But for years, one defining trait of a chimera was the presence of multiple heads, usually from several different creatures. The horizon chimera doesn't just buck this trend but smashes it entirely.
The horizon chimera has not only one head, but the head it has resembles no other creature found on Theros. Horizon chimeras are some unclear combination of bird and antelope, with a face that sits closely to both but is fully neither. Until the discovery of the horizon chimera, it was believed that all chimera must fundamentally include parts pulled wholesale from other animals found in Theros. Instead, horizon chimeras appear to be a blend of two creatures, perfectly blended in a way no other chimera is.
Kruphix's Chosen It was shortly after their discovery on a small, jungle island that Kruphix, the god of horizons, proclaimed the horizon chimeras as under his protection. This decision is, in fact, why the name horizon chimera was first chosen for the creatures and has led to further speculation on their origins. Like Kruphix, the horizon chimeras are a mystery within a mystery- both are already part of a strange and unfathomable group, and both break many of the rules associated with their group.
For some naturalists, Kruphix's protection of the chimeras is a sign that they were created by the god of the horizons himself, perhaps in the same way that stags are believed to have been created by Heliod or tigers created by Nylea. Others insist, though, the Kruphix only protects the horizon chimeras because they are rare and unique, both traits which the god of horizons is known to value, and that even Kruphix is unsure of the origins of these enigmatic creatures.
