Hollowhenge Scavenger
A hulking body of crumbled stone, twisted and tangled with old and rotted roots; massive arms tipped with curved branches, each one like a fish hook; and at the center of the mass, animating it all, a sickly green glow, older than time itself. Called hollowhenge scavengers, these lumbering elementals of earth and root are named after the ruined town of Avabruck, where modern Innistradians first encountered them, but Church records indicate these monsters could be far, far older.
Ancient Threats The oldest reference to what could be the hollowhenge scavengers comes from Lucios Gilford, a farmer-turned-monk who in later life wrote an account of encountering the elementals. According to Lucius, a horde of risen dead tore the town near his homestead to shreds, but miraculously, the lives of Lucios and his family were spared. After the tragedy, a few of the survivors, including Lucius, stayed and attempted to rebuild, while others left for greener pastures. It was only a few months into the achingly slow process of reclaiming the town that they appeared.
The creatures Lucius described match the appearance of the hollowhenge scavengers nearly word-for-word, from the bodies carved of rock and deadwood, to the eerie green glow that sits at their core. The first time they appeared, it appears they borrowed up from Lucius' own fields and slaughtered the man's family while he and his son were away, helping to raise another farmer's barn. As the months passed, more of the monsters appeared, killing more and more of what few villagers remained, before wandering off into the nearby forest, eventually forcing the town to be totally abandoned. Lucius left with nothing and almost no one, retreated to the safety of the Church, eventually choosing the life of a monk.
Terror Renewed Though not certain that the beings Lucius encountered were the same as the hollowhenge scavengers, in researching Lucius' account further, a terrifying new theory has come to light. HomaIt would appear that the village Lucius lived in, which hasn't existed on any map for centuries, was settled in the same plot of land that until recently held the town of Avabruck, now called Hollowhenge. Though no mention is made of the hollowhenge scavengers, it is known that, in the past, the town of Avabruck has fallen and been rebuilt at least once more.
The repetitive nature of towns that settle on this land, they're horrifying after, and the sudden appearance of the scavengers, begs the question of whether there could be something more happening there. Whether some ancient force, unknown even to the ancient angels of the Avacynian Church, could be directing the goings-on's at Hollowhenge, and if so, for what mysterious purpose.
