Deathbloom Thallid
Created in ancient ages past by an extinct race of elves, the thallids are creatures of living plant matter, fungi which show only the most rudimentary signs of intelligence. Once restricted to the ancient continent of Sarpadia, they would eventually spread to other areas of the world, slowly becoming a fixture in the jungles and forests which spread across Dominaria. As the millenia have passed, the thallids have slowly evolved to fill specialized ecological niches, showing a great variety in their place in the ecosystem.
Life from Death The deathbloom thallid takes its name from the specialized way in which it creates saprolings, the animalistic plant creatures which all thallids have the ability to grow from within. In truth, a deathbloom thallid is not a specific kind of thallid, but has a relationship closer to that which zombies have with other living creatures. The deathbloom thallid is produced when a thallid in the process of producing a saproling dies in an area with high levels of oxygen, water, and decaying matter. These conditions allow the saproling within the thallid to continue growing, albeit at a slowed rate, with the thallids’ body continuing to animate. The resulting saproling has no way of escaping the decaying thallid, and indeed no sentience until it is released. This usually occurs once the deathbloom thallid has sufficiently decayed, or when it is destroyed by larger predators.
