Creepy Doll
In a world of such darkness as Innistrad, danger can come from all places. Packs of wolves rove through the forests, while vampires fly from their castles at night to glide through open windows. But even within the town walls, inside of your own home, you are never truly safe. For terrifying fears lurk in each and every corner, wielding sharpened blades of strange malice. Among the dozens, one such terror is the aptly named creepy doll.
Running with Scissors The creepy doll is just as its name implies- a simple doll, often like any other found in the bedroom of young children, with painted face and hair crafted from yarn or thread. But lurking behind other toys, few notice the unwieldy scissors or small knives glued or bolted to the doll's hands. Not until the doll has leapt from its cover to plunge the blade into it's victim's skin. Each doll's exact appearance varies, though the most common seem to be in the appearance of young, aristocratic ladies, with dresses of lace and well-done hair. The dolls that appear as such are always armed with a pair of razor-sharp scissors, crafted from dull brass. The majority of creepy dolls are found in the moorlands of Gavony, near Stensia and Kessig, but a rare few make their way to Nephalia or near Thraben as well.
A Hard Problem to Deal With For those with the fortune to yet encounter them, dealing with a creepy doll would seem to be an easy task. And truthfully, the doll's small size that allows them to easily hide works against them, making them rather slow, clumsy, and physically weak. but their size belies the powerful magic animating them, enchantments which turn their wooden bodies to stone against any weapon not crafted from pure silver, and prevent them from catching fire or freezing solid. The weapons the dolls carry are also cursed, and the small scratches they leave bleed out and resist even the healing magic of the Church. Cathars dealing with reports of creepy dolls work in squads, and must come prepared with powerful acids to melt the doll's otherwise unbreakable construction.
Origins Lost and Found While creepy dolls are not unusual in any township of Innistrad, the wide variety of origins of the deadly playthings has led to their unusually generic name. Avacynian priests which study the dolls after they've been subdued have found a wide number of reasons for their animation. Some are possessed by the spirts of geists, those killed in violent deaths, somehow bound to the doll through necromancy. Others find the dolls to be entirely independent, creatures of artificial life similar to skaabs, but with no organic components. Because of this, the Church has come to the conclusion that some alchemists and stitchers have been sharing information, and appointed a special council to find and eliminate the suspects. but some villagers, and even a few cathars, have whispered the idea that the dolls might all be coming form one place, or one person. The Church scoffs at the idea that one spellcaster might be making every doll, but others aren't so sure- and they worry as to what sort madman would spend all their time making such carefully handcrafted dolls, only to curse them and send them into the world full of vitriol and hate.
