Bident of Thassa

Also known as the Shaper of Wills, the bident Dekella is the signature weapon of Thassa, the Therosian goddess of the sea. Thassa is not only in charge of the seas of Theros, but also serves as the deity of mysteries, ancient lore, and the gradual change of time. In her hands, Dekella shapes minds as easily as it does coastlines, in ways both profound and frightening.    Thassa, like many of Theros' gods, is known to loan her weapon to mortals from time to time. But stories of Thassa gifting Dekella are much rare and has been known to happen only a handful of times in all of Theros' written history. In the hands of mortal creatures, Dekella loses much of its power, but it retains some of its ability to bend minds, leaving it a formidable weapon all the same.    Magic Weapon The bident Dekella is a magic weapon that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it.    Random Properties Dekella has the following randomly determined properties:
  • 1 major detrimental property
  • 2 minor beneficial properties
  • 1 minor detrimental property
Hidden Lore While wielding the bident, you can cast the legend lore spell three times per long rest without expending a spell slot. When you do so, you don't learn the information provided by the spell, but the bident does. Whether Dekella chooses to share this information, and how much of it, is at its own discretion.   While on any plane other than Theros, you can only cast the legend lore spell once per long rest, and the spell functions as normal.    Plumb the Depths Whenever you hit a creature with an attack from the bident, it must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. A creature with an Intelligence of 5 or lower automatically succeeds on this saving throw. If the creature fails the saving throw, you automatically learn one secret which the creature holds. The exact nature of the secret learned is at the DM's discretion.    Ruler of the Deep While wielding the bident, you can use an action to cast the dominate beast speel as a 6th-level spell at will, targeting any creature with a swim speed. You can also cast the dominate monster spell once per week, targeting any creature with a swim speed. The Wisdom saving throw DC for this spell is 17 or your spell save DC, whichever is higher.    Shaoer of Wills Dekella has 4 charges. While wielding it, you can use an action to expend 1 or more of its charges to cast a number of spells. You can extend 1 charge to cast command as a 2nd-level spell, 2 charges to cast compulsion, 3 charges to cast dominant person, or 4 charges to cast mass suggestion. The saving throw DC for these spells is 17 or your spell save is DC, whichever is higher. The bident regains 1d4-1 extended charges each day at dawn, as long as it is totally submerged in saltwater.    Sentience Dekella is a sentient lawful neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 19, a Wisdom of 14, and a Charisma of 15. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. The weapon can speak, read, and understand Aquan, Common, and Merfolk, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically. Its voice is lifting and echoing, with an unfathomable deepness. While on any plane other than Theros, Dekella losses its sentience and regains it upon returning to Theros.    Personality As the favored weapon of Thassa, god of change, Dekella is vehemently opposed to stagnation. Wherever the bident goes, it attempts to bring change, though it cares less about whether the change is good or bad for those involved. Dekella is also strongly motivated by knowledge, especially hidden or forbidden knowledge, and actively seeks new knowledge wherever it goes. Dekella does no speak often, but prefers to wait and watch, only interrupting when it feels it has something of value to add.    If its wielder goes directly against an order from Thassa or one of her priests, or doesn't cast legend lore using the bident and its wielder at the next dawn. If Dekella wins a conflict against its wielder, it can chose to automatically return to Thassa's possession, vanishing immediately and automatically breaking the attunement of its wilder.
