Base Kavu
The kavu have existed for millennia, and are one of Dominaria's oldest species. In ancient times they descended beneath the heart to escape an environmental cataclysm, and there they slowly evolved from efficient hunters to deadly mutants.
Natural-Born Defenders When Phyrexia invaded Dominaria, the nature spirit Multami uses his magic to fight back against the invaders, accidentally awakening the long-dormant kavu and drawing them to the surface. There they turned to the aid of Dominaria's defenders, helping to drive back the fiendish machines.
When Yawgmoth was killed and the invasion ended, the kavu remained on Dominaria's surface, in a world radically different than the one they had left behind. Their presence recreated long-vanished ecological good chains, and their presence was integrated into the societies of many of Dominaria's forests and mountain ranges.
Radical Mutation From their long time spent in Dominaria's core, at a conflux of its magic, the kavu were instilled with an incredible ability to magically adapt to and overcome even the worst of circumstances. When they arrived on the surface once more, this mutable nature stayed with them, and kavu have since used it to spread throughout Dominaria's natural lands.
The adaptability of kavu has given rise to forms of the creature which can breathe fire, spit acid, grow and launch spines from their tails and back, catch and reflect the light of the sun, and any other manner of defense and offense. Only time will tell what new adaptations will next rise from the ranks of the kavu.
