Aetherflux Reservoir

One of the most efficient systems available for storing magical power, the aetherflux reservoir is an enchanted container which solidifies normal magical power into a highly combustible, neon blue liquid. Aetherflux reservoirs come in three different sizes, each more rare and expensive to build than the last. The size of an aetherflux reservoir determines how much magical power it can hold, and how much magical power it can release once it’s built up. Aetherflux reservoirs are by no means a common creation, and are found only in magically-advanced societies. The largest of reservoirs take so much expertise to assemble, that only a few have ever been built, and only in an act of great effort by a highly advanced civilization.
  • Small- 10 lb., very rare, 10 charges
  • Medium- 50 lb., legendary, 25 charges
  • Large- 200 lb., artifact, 50 charges
Aetherflux reservoirs are normally made as a means of powering magical objects, structures, and machines, working in a similar way to a battery. The series of tubes, chargers, and other machines required for this, as well as the volatility of a reservoir’s contents, often makes them impractical for transport or as mobile power sources. However, when the highly pressurized liquid inside of an aetherflux reservoir is released, it can serve as a powerful, improvised magical weapon. Any spellcaster touching the input valve of an aetherflux reservoir can expend a spell slot of any level to place magical energy into the reservoir, in a process that takes 5 minutes for each level of the expended spell slot. The aetherflux reservoir then gains 1 charge for each level of the expended spell slot. Once an aetherflux reservoir has been filled with the maximum number of charges it can hold, any creature touching the output valve of the reservoir can draw energy from it by expending all of the collected charges, unleashing the reservoir’s contents in a powerful, concentrated magical blast. This blast can take one of three forms chosen by the creature releasing the contents- a 90-foot long, 5-foot wide line; a 60-foot cone; or three rays of magical energy. If the energy is released in the form of a line or a cone, each creature in the area must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, on a failed saving throw taking 1d0 force damage for each charge expended from the aetherflux reservoir, or half as much damage on a successful one. If the energy is released in the form of three rays, the creature releasing the energy makes three ranged spell attacks against up to three creatures it can see within 120 ft; this attack is made with a +8 bonus. On a successful hit, a target takes 1d6 force damage for each charge expended from the reservoir.
