ranger

The rangers are the scouts of the mortal races, travelling far and wide to uninhabited and hostile lands to find any threats and avert them or find the next settlement and warn its people of the threat. Their main task was of course the watching of the demons.

Since the earliest days of the mortal races, becoming one of the rangers was a long and stony road. Only few ever heard this calling.

    — Ranger to a pupil
Becoming a ranger meant years and years of training at the side of a seasoned ranger, crossing many thousands of miles over all kinds of terrain. Only those that could find their way in lands without paths, maps or compass would ascend into the ranks of the rangers.
But these were not the only skills a ranger needed. During the years of training one would need to proof many abilities such as tracking, leading, weather reading, hunting, water finding and decision making. Last of which was one of the most important skills of a ranger.
Usually travelling alone, every ranger must decide for themselves what to do and how to act in any situation. They must keep a cool head and act bravely although none may ever know if they ran away. On their shoulders lies the responsibility of keeping everyone safe without them even noticing the were ever in danger.
Therefore the rangers must be selfcontent and be ready to do whatever is needed without expecting any thanks. Pride is only tolerated to a certain extend, vanity is one of the worst crimes.

Rangers are not paid for by  the common people. During the earliest days before nobility existed, the rangers were regarded very highly by all folk and offered food, clothes, acomodation and weapons wherever they went. When nobility rose they became more and more often housed by the newborn nobles and were given money and rich clothes in the hopes of binding single rangers to one place and have them guarding for example the lands of the lord that favored them.
In these days they begann to grow vast treasuries and built their own calstles around them.

From the second Order onwards they became lessa dn less respected and often had to pay for everything from their own coin.

    Perception

    Purpose

The whole purpose of the rangers is the safekeeping of the mortals races from monsters and other dangers.
At times they may also act as guides to travellers or travelling parties.

    Social Status

In the early days of the mortal races this used to be one of the highest honors to be chosen for. Ascending to the ranks of the rangers were the dreams of little boys and girls alike.
The rangers themselves were celebrated were ever they came to and housed in the best lodgings, given the best food and often asked to tell stories of their adventured. Thses were held in awe and by every story the rangers became more and more like heroes.

This however begann to change during the Long Peace, when nobility rose and he rangers lost contact with the common folk. In these days the people begann to mutter about the rangers sitting idly at the tables of the highborn and neglecting their tasks. This was of course never true but as the rangers did not tell stories of their adventures anymore the people did not know of their doings anymore. Any attacks by monsters or even wolfes were soon enough blamed on the idle rangers.

When the peace broke and the long years of the demon wars followed, the social status of the rangers sack even lower. For in these times of despair the rangers raced from place to place, showing up just to warn of some other danger, and dissappearing just as quick again. They rarely stayed to help fight off any dangers anymore for the simple reason that they did non have any time for it. But as this was not known to the common folk and most were just tired of bad news this behaviour further lowered the rangers´ reputation until they were known as "bringers of bad news" and  nowhere welcome.

This it came that from the third Order onwards the rangers withdrew mostly into the wilds and ventured among the mortal races no more. Still they did their duty of guarding the mortals but they did so now in secret. Wherever they came to the settlements they were regarded as strangers and with distrust and disliking.(There are of course examples to this where the true ways of the rangers are still remembered).

During the years of the great expanse many of them earned their money with the guiding of trading parties. This however was regarded very low amongst the rangers themselves and they became few.

    History

The rangers originally were called into existence by the high spirits along with the council of the high tower. They were to roam the lands and slay monsters and protect the people.
At first they were highly regarded, even higher than the members of the council as they were closer to the people. Wherever they went they never had to worry about bed or food or clothes as all was provided willingly by the people.

Wit the rising of nobility however they began to distance themselves from the common people and more and more lodged with the nobles. By those they were given great gifts of money and land and in these years many of the rangers became more proud. However they never stopped in their duty of protecting all the people of the Land. Yet they found now they had enough money to built castles for themselves where they held their meetings and kept their many precious gifts.

This time ended yet very sudden with the beginning of the demon wars. The rangers left their castles and sped over the lands, warning the people wherever they came from more dangers than any could care for. They fought many battles and tus became few in numbers.
They were however not wholly diminuished by this war, but so was their reputation. They had no choice but to become a secret people if they wished to continue to do their duty. So they returned to their now ruined castles as a reminder of their own vanity and continued their work from their. Over time however they became less and less as they died alone in the wild, grew old or became simple guides to travellers.
Yet the coe of the rangers was never lost. To the end of days the rangers remained alive.
