The species of this world have spread and mixed into several countries across the continent to the point that there is less of a concept of a specific species homeland and more lines drawn by current politics. This mixing of peoples encourages travel between nations, especially for the competent warrior or mage in search of their fortune as a Mercenary. People of this world are fascinated by ancient relics and magic left from the far-flung past that use powerful runes to alter fate and reality. This skill to make runes has become lost knowledge of the current day, and its scarcity captures the interest of kings and scholars alike. For this reason, mercenaries are hired to scour the corners of the world and seek out shrines or other areas left behind by the ancients.   Mercenaries find themselves hired for a variety of missions that take them to the deep forests, high mountains, and desolate dunes. The environments are challenging, and the competition is fierce; it isn’t uncommon to see Humans work alongside Dwarves, Elves, Fey, Undead, or even young Dragons in their attempt to carry out missions.

The world of Otenia is currently used as the setting for a tactical miniatures game in development called Mercenary HX. This game allows players to build 3D battlefields and take on the role of a Tactician who hires Mercenaries for a specific task. Players leverage terrain and elemental abilities in a turn-based system to accomplish a mission, sometimes together but often pitted against each other.   This game features original pixel art and a host of colorful characters created using traditional methods and a color palette that belongs to the Sega Genesis era of video games. Players will find themselves assessing a battlefield tactically to hire the best unit for the job and then supporting that unit with magic, items, and specialized skills that are unique to each tactician.   Mercenary HX is still a work in progress, but it is in the playtesting phase.
