The Itis

This food is so good, I'm going to go into a food coma after I'm done.

The itis is a condition that causes one to slip into a comatose-like state after consuming food. When the food someone is eating is too good not to "finish the plate," then they are at risk of contracting the itis. A feeling of fullness and typically satisfaction and/or pleasure occurs, accompanied by the more common symptoms of laziness and sleepiness, and sometimes a feeling of bloating. The Itis is not permanent but can last from 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on one's metabolism and physique. Further feelings of laziness, sleepiness, and/or bloatedness can be signs of a worse condition.

Cultural Reception

Many nations in Duankh are wealthy and have access to good food supplies, therefore the itis is very common in many households. In Apeti, however, large meals and feasts are rare, and many people dream of having the itis just once in their lives. The Merchant Lords of Kala-Kau host extravagant parties often, and many attendees sarcastically complain about how much food they've eaten and how they can just lie on the beach and melt away, feeling great in their food coma. In the Heh'n Empire, unless you are nobility, you don't attend grand feasts often, but the empire provides food for its subjects, and much of that food is high in protein and fiber, and high starch like rice and other grains; therefore, many families contract the itis daily. It can be seen as an affront to the food preparer if one does not have the itis afterwards, for that means either someone didn't eat enough or that the food was not tasty enough to eat it all. Many drakkin of Kuuland consider the itis to be a sign of their closeness to their true dragon progenitors. Hoards do not only have to pertain to treasure, hoarding food, having enough to eat as much as you want when you want, that is the mark of a true dragon. Philae, being the most populous nation, is full of people who have had the itis due to noble feasts or holiday celebrations with the family. However, it is also the most religious nation and some religious fundamentalists believe the itis to be a sign of gluttony and therefore look down upon those who eat to what they consider excess. Only those who worship the Divine Bliss see the itis as holy, for indulging in the pleasures of life is the highest of her tenets.
