Nagani
Nagani (s and pl) are a subgroup of Lizardfolk that are specialized for life in a jungle or wetland environment. They prefer warm, humid environments, with large amounts of flora, especially near rivers or lakes, and are equally comfortable on land and in water.
Physiologically, they have much in common with snakes, having shorter and rounder snouts than their cousins, longer tongues, shorter and thinner arms and fingers, and most significantly, no legs, having instead a broad and thick lower body that tapers smoothly into a long tail. They travel by rectilinear locomotion, tend to bunch or coil their tails when resting or standing still, and often roll into a ball while sleeping. They are by far the longest-bodied of their kind, but their tails drag on the ground and are not included in height measurements.
Whereas the Sahani prefer large and dense population clusters and the Carani are found in small and widely-spread groups with little interaction between them, Nagani society has a low density, but its members are well-connected, not only keeping in regular contact with their neighbors, but also corresponding with colleagues across the land. Messenger services running to and from Mitok ensure that the people are well aware of current events and the deeds of their leaders.
Though the Nagani have lived throughout the Northern and Southern Continents, wherever favorable environments were to be found, they long since formed a civilization unto themselves on Kinteki, which was both homogeneous and isolationist, and about which little is known historically by outsiders. The Isles were invaded by Senyan settlers in the 19th century BC, and eventually coagulated into the Kinteki Allegiance, of which the Nagani are still the major population.
Transformation: Coatl
A Nagani who reaches great age and power becomes a Coatl, a winged serpent. This transformation is held in great reverence, and those who achieve it maintain a high status, and are the default leaders of their people. It is usually achieved by a lifetime of meditation and asceticism, and most who manage it set out to do so at an early age. Most Coatls live in Makaw, composing the highest councils of Kinteki's Reptilian leadership, though some travel throughout the land, observing the state of the country.Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Most Nagani are from Kinteki, and thus speak Kiikoo as a primary language. Those from other regions speak the predominant language of their home, usually Grakimi or Drathi.
Shared customary codes and values
Nagani are no less religious than any of their kin, but are inclined towards mysticism and hoodoo, their religious rites kept as close secrets only for the initiated, their worship more private. Moreso than other Reptilians, they prize intellectual and philosophical pursuits, revering those in the clergy as having a closer mental position to that of the gods.
Common Dress code
Because they live in environments to which they are well-suited, Nagani need little in the way of covering, and their clothes are designed primarily to aid camouflage, carry items via pockets, or display the wearer's status, especially for members of clergies. They wear colors that complement their scales, and it can be difficult to tell where one ends and the next begins. Formal and ecclesiastical garb resembles robes, with hoods that fend off precipitation and flared sleeves that can be tucked inside one another, creating the impression of a true serpent with no limbs.
Art & Architecture
While they frequently build small wooden huts, especially in underpopulated areas or the edges of their territory, they are the only subtype of Reptilians to prefer building in stone, with an aim toward permanence and defensibility as well as comfort. In particular, they favor tall structures with a round or square base, which taper upward in distinct tiers, each of which may be assigned for the use of a specific social group, those of higher status toward the top.
These structures are also layered in their cross-sections; the outer area is used for basking or light activity, the top of each tier serving as the floor of the next. The interior of the structure is primarily for sleeping, built as one singular corridor that surrounds the building, with many large doorways that are sealed at night and during unpleasant weather. The core of the building is used for storage and for important rituals and social activities, and has the greatest amount of security. As with the people, the quality of the goods and activities contained within increase with the height of the building, unlike with other Reptilian constructions which place the greatest valuables below the surface.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Their sleeping is communal, but they have no designated quarters, instead resting wherever they are comfortable, usually indoors and in socially-organized groups. Outsiders will find that there are no special places for meetings, and all trade with those not of the community (especially if they are not Reptilian) will be expected to remain out of doors or in very basic shelters, and not invited into the buildings unless they earn great respect from the locals.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
Nagani have multicolored patterns in their scales which often form intricate, swirling lines. An idealized visualization of their kind will emphasize these to an unrealistic degree, and many use cosmetics or magic to make their own patterns more complex, as well as wearing clothes that are designed to accentuate them. Abstract curves and spirals are preferred, but sometimes a shape that hints of a specific creature or landmark is noted and used as a sobriquet for the person.
Major organizations
As the indigenous population of Kinteki, though partly displaced, they now make up a modest majority with 52% of that land's people. They also make up 9% of the Mantle of Mehen and also the Conglomeration, 7% of Senya, 4% of Grakim, 3% of Drathis, about the same in the Central Subcontinent, and about 2% of the Neglessi Collective.
