Dweregar

A subgroup of Dwarves whose principality is Dwereth, the nornernmost kingdom of the Crowning Ranges. Content to dwell in a rough and cold, nearly inhospitable environment, they are renowned for showing the same qualities, especially to non-Dwarves. It's said they refuse to have any business with those outside of their borders, except in matters of trade or, more seldom, war. Nevertheless, they are highly practiced at trade, because they produce some of the most prized goods in the world, and also import many of their basic needs.   Dweregar have somehow become the quintessential image of Dwarfdom to the outside world, especially beyond the continent. When Dwarves are depicted as short, heavily-armored and thick-bearded, engaging in constant cycles of mining, warfare and drinking, it is these people in particular who are being referenced.

Transformation: Erdgeist

All Dwarves have an innate affinity with the stone in which they live, allowing them to sense its presence and shape around them. Among the Dweregar, those who hone this talent to its utmost level are able to alter the makeup of the stone they touch, changing its structure and altering its properties or even making one material into another. This ability is often used in conjunction with traditional alchemy, but the superstitious Dwerethians have strict limitations on which of such alterations may be made.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Their mother tongue is Dwerethi, which is unrelated to all Elven tongues and believed to be distantly related to the language of the Tuatha Dwarves. It is distinct enough that outsiders, even other Dwarves, are unable to understand it without considerable study, and even those from different regions within the country of Dwereth can have trouble understanding each other. The main dialectical distinctions are between the Northeast, which is colder and more rocky, and the Southwest, where many live on or near the sea.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Dweregar value shows of strength and resilience, but these are not without subtlety. The particular way one shows their strength says much about them.
Among males it is customary to incorporate mail armor and heavy metallic accessories to their clothing, provided it does not hinder their movement, while full armor is strictly reserved for those who actually serve in a military organization. These pieces are expected to be elegantly crafted as well as strong, and may sport complex patterns or embellishments.
Among females it is common to wear lighter and more delicate accessories along the same lines, made of more precious metals. Additionally, most gemstones are considered feminine and reserved for women to wear, though some are worn exclusively by men or allowed by both genders.   Of particular note to outsiders is the attitude toward hair, especially facial hair. Both men and women have beards, but they tend to be thicker and longer in the case of men. Both genders are expected to braid their hair, but in women the intricacy of such tends very high, in some cases requiring hours of maintenance on a regular basis.

Gender Ideals

The distinction between male and female styles is very fine from an outsider's point of view, leading to many forming the opinion, based on their own cultural biases, that all Dwarves are male or at least pretend to be so. In fact, any Dwarf can tell a male garment from a female one easily and is happy to comment on the strength and masculinity of one, and the beauty and intricacy of the other.

Major organizations

Dweregar are strongly associated with Dwereth; they are its primary ethnic group, and seldom encountered outside. Even among Dwarves, Dweregar are considered reluctant to leave their homeland, yet the high quality of their products means most merchants throughout the world know something about them, even if they have never seen a Dwereg in person.
