Hannah Ying

(a.k.a. Sickle)

"I first met Hannah in a little bar on ACOLYTE Station. I knew she was a Shung citizen but I didn't think too much of it until I made the bad mistake of making a joke about the empire coddling its citizens a bit too much. I found out firsthand that Hannah doesn't hide behind ACEs and drones and enjoys taking care of things with her bare hands. A bit of totally deserved reconstructive dental work later and I managed to establish a working relationship, though she still doesn't like me much." ~Chevalier Sikkah Notte   FREELANCER RELIABILITY INDEX: 0.61

Personal history

Hannah Ying is descended from one of the original military families of the Shung Empire, and her early life resembles that of most Shung citizens. Pampered and protected, she was given the standard Shung drone training expected of a future citizen-shoulder. She learned to pilot drones before she could walk. By the time she was in her mid-teens she'd enlisted in the Shung military and was shipped out to Tempestus XI as part of a joint Shung and Covenant Progeniture operation.   There she found that despite assurances to the contrary, war was not neat and tidy. Her unit's control vessel was shot down in orbit, and the crash-landing killed most of her comrades and maimed the rest. Hannah lost an arm and eventually one of her kidneys. They managed to limp for cover in one of the Progeniture bunkers just before a massive NEB offensive. Most of Hannah's unit was press-ganged into service despite losing most of their drones. Most of her comrades died, becoming little better than cannon fodder. Hannah and a few others barely lived, but even this was little respite. Covenant teams managed to recover the wreck of the Shung control vessel and found orders in the black box: the Shung commander had orders to eventually betray the Covenant, all in an effort to extract a highly-placed spy before a heavystorm hit. Hannah and the other survivors were declared spies and sentenced to death. Only Hannah escaped execution, thanks to an early blood transfusion during the beginning of the campaign (technically making her part of the Covenant) and her comparatively young age. She was confined to a prison until a Shung diplomatic vessel came and extracted her.   Despite the best cybernetics money could buy, Hannah was never the same after that. Her brutal exposure to actual warfare, the duplicity of her commanders, and the trauma of the deaths of her comrades had left the formerly chipper and hopeful teen jaded. She left Shung space soon afterwards, taking on the role of a freelancer- much to her own dark amusement, it turned out she became pretty good at covert operations. Rumor has it the Shung Empire keeps close watch on her still, assisting her in subtle ways- the Shung never leave their own truly alone. Her tendency to try and avoid Shung space gives some credence to this rumor.

Education

Hannah Ying has the benefit of a full Shung Empire education, giving her general competency in most fields and making her an excellent drone pilot. She is largely self-taught at covert operations, mostly through the school of hard knocks.   Notable skills: Piloting [Drones]; Covert [Streetwise]   Secondary skills: Heavy Weapons [Demolitions]; Unarmed Combat [Brawling]

Employment

Hannah can usually be found on the edges of Dynasty and Hundred Polities space, where she (mistakenly) believes she is farthest away from the Shung Empire's influence. She's often found on ACOLYTE Station, but has her own small jump-capable ship she can use to quickly reach potential employers. She commonly takes sabotage jobs, though occasionally tries her hand at anything so long as the price is right.   Last contract: Smuggled 15 kilos of Broken Pottery Red spice mix to ACOLYTE Station. This mix is an extraordinarily expensive luxury item- one part condiment, one part mild hallucinogenic, one part aphrodisiac- and was stolen from a Dynasty marquis. The Sun Dynasty hired a pair of freelancers, the Impossible Brothers, to recapture the spice and shake down the fence before he could resell it. The fence caught wind as soon as the two docked and hurriedly hired Hannah before they could close in on him. Time was of the essence and Hannah moved quickly to intercept. This led to a desperate knock-down, drag-out fight in the ACOLYTE Station market. Though Hannah eventually won out, her left arm was damaged, two of her drones were destroyed, and she was successfully sued by most of the merchants whose wares she had helped pulverize. The mission resulted in a net loss of funds and a noticeable drop in her FRI. The Impossible Brothers, on the other hand, were duly interred in the ACOLYTE Station waste vats.
