Arkendelle

The City of Steam

"In the heart of eternal ice, we forged a haven where life and technology intertwine, warming the fate of mortals."
— Motto of Arkendelle
Arkendelle, often called "The Jewel of Vélactris," is an exceptional city distinguished by its perfect balance of functional architecture and artistic beauty. Situated in a vast frozen plain, it symbolizes the resilience and harmony of the inhabitants of Vélactris, a world dominated by Cryos, the god of ice.

History and Foundation

The foundation of Arkendelle dates back to the early years following the Great Separation. As Vélactris descended into perpetual winter, human and dwarf settlers, driven by a spirit of survival and cooperation, decided to settle near a geothermal rift. This natural heat source enabled them to build the first infrastructures, marking the birth of the city.   Under the guidance of visionary engineers, Arkendelle quickly became a center of technological development. The creation of steam engines, steam boilers and underground heat networks transformed the city into a refuge for those fleeing the extreme surface conditions.

Government and Social Organization

Arkendelle is governed by a Council of Artisans, an assembly composed of representatives from the city's main guilds:
  • The Master Blacksmiths manage the infrastructure and weaponry.
  • The Ice Alchemists innovate in chemistry and medicine.
  • The Steam Engineers oversee mechanical and energy systems.
The Council operates on a meritocratic system, where each member is elected based on their contributions to the city. A unifying figure, the High Architect, acts as the spokesperson for the Council and arbitrates in cases of disagreement.   The society is hierarchical but inclusive: citizens, whether human, dwarf, or other, can be promoted based on their skills and dedication. However, this dynamic favors a technological elite, sometimes leaving the working classes in difficult conditions.

Culture and Way of Life

Arkendelle is a cultural melting pot where art, technology, and community blend. The people celebrate the "Festival of Steam," an annual event where invention contests and enchanted light shows illuminate the city.   Mechanical music, created with steam organs, is highly prized, while sculptors work with blocks of ice and crystal to create stunning artworks. The inhabitants lead a practical lifestyle, but the wealthier classes display their status with accessories adorned with crystals.

Technology and Engineering

Arkendelle is a center of innovation where its inhabitants constantly push the limits of steam technology. Some of the major innovations include:
  • Heat Conduits: A network of geothermal pipes that distribute heat throughout the city, ensuring thermal comfort.
  • Frost Lights: Lamps powered by enchanted ice crystals, providing soft and lasting illumination.
  • Mechanical Transportation: Steam-powered trams circulate between districts, facilitating movement throughout the city.
These technologies, developed with a focus on efficiency and respect for natural resources, make Arkendelle a model of engineering in Vélactris.

Economy and Trade

Arkendelle's economy is based on the export of advanced technologies, such as miniature steam engines and precision tools. The surrounding mines provide the raw materials needed, while the city's markets attract traders from all over Vélactris.   However, this prosperity is fragile: access to underground resources is becoming increasingly difficult, and political upheaval between cities threatens trade routes.

Geography and Environment

Arkendelle spans a vast plain bordered by icy mountains. The city is divided into several districts, each with a specific function:
  • The Heart of Steam: The industrial center where steam engines and geothermal forges power the city.
  • The Ice Square: A vast plaza adorned with ice sculptures illuminated by luminescent crystals. This is where ceremonies and festivals are held.
  • The District of Arts: An area dedicated to artisans and artists who create masterpieces inspired by ice and light.
  • The Underground Galleries: A network of tunnels and underground shelters providing warmth and protection during extreme storms.
Arkendelle's architecture is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The buildings, constructed from reinforced ice and metal alloys, reflect the surrounding light in dazzling displays. The roofs, designed to prevent snow accumulation, are often adorned with geometric patterns reminiscent of snowflakes.

Relations with Other Cities

Frosthaven

Arkendelle maintains a cautious cooperative relationship with Frosthaven. While Frosthaven provides rare metals, Arkendelle excels in transformation and invention.

Heidheim

The ties with Heidheim are primarily strategic. Arkendelle's technologies support the military forces of the fortress, but tensions remain due to philosophical differences.

Mirragel

Exchanges with Mirragel remain limited, as cultural mistrust between the two cities hinders the establishment of a lasting alliance.
