Pentagenete of Tiamat
The Pentagenete of Tiamat was the journey Tiamat took through the Material Plane to create the first five chromatic dragons.
Summary
When Bahamut and Tiamat escaped their subordination to the gods, they settled by the edge of the Elemental Plane of Earth, and the Blue Mountains rose to shield them as they grew their brood. Their first eggs, created from love, were metallic dragons in Bahamut's image: gold and silver, brass and copper, bronze and steel. With each egg she nurtured, Tiamat longed for a wyrmling in her own image, but none appeared.
When Bahamut made his pact with Corellon Latharien to leave the mountains and protect Bjália, Tiamat took this as an abandonment and betrayal. She left the Blue Mountains and circled the Material Plane, rampaging through the world and devastating the landscape in grief and fury. Her outbursts of emotion were so strong that, where she had sown the most destruction, chromatic dragons in her image were born. The largest of these became legendary figures in their own right:
- Zerustrachum, the Emperor of Greed, a blue dragon who emerged where Tiamat's elemental breath split the rocky wastes of the Lands of Ash
- Vellundithoer, the Merciless King, a white dragon carved from the deepest ice of a mountain glacier, creating the Thermocline Grotto
- Famadiatreu , the All-Consuming Grief, a black dragon drawn from the murky depths of the Oddwaters
- Haethengrent, the Vengeful Queen, a green dragon sprouted from a massive treefall in the depths of the Verlorenwode
- Lohikäärme, the Avatar of Wrath, a red dragon born in the cataclysmic eruption of Eldjfallúa in the Hephaestan Ridge
Historical Basis
A handful of records survive from ancient civilizations in the areas near the chromatic dragons' birth. Cave etchings from ancient Gnist, discovered south of Kortrebahk-Fjällbass, depict the first coming of Zerustrachum; some sages speculate that Zerustrachum and his offspring directly caused the decline of Gnistendom. Some surviving family crests from ancient Dovria depict green dragons, suggesting that the creature was known to (and possibly even slain by) Dovrian warriors.
Most chromatic dragons of all colors currently make their home in Draxhaven. Black and green dragons are believed to be extinct in their homelands, though some pseudo-draconic creatures inhabit the areas alongside their current populations.
Most versions of the myth state that Tiamat flew around the entire Material Plane creating her offspring, yet the five dragons named in the myth originate exclusively on continental Belcantas. It is unknown whether or not other chromatic dragons—either of the known five colors or of different types—were born in the Mystic Lands.
