Free School of Cantonova

The Free School of Cantonova is a community college and educational institution in the Cuarto Folletti district of Cantonova dedicated to making education in arts, humanities, and practical skills free and accessible for people of all backgrounds. There are no tuition or registration costs for any classes.

Culture

Cooperation, curiosity, and open-mindedness are central tenets of the Free School of Cantonova's campus culture and teaching methods. Instructors are strongly encouraged to use their first names in the classroom instead of any professional or formal title, and to spend time in common spaces in and around the school and have open conversations with students outside of class. There are no set course orders or degree programs, though a few instructors occasionally run advanced courses only open to past students they personally invite.   Benefits provided to students, such as access to free on-campus meals and discounted tickets at various local theaters and performance venues, are available to anyone who actively attends at least one course; in exchange, all such students are expected to spend at least two hours a week volunteering on campus as cooks, janitors, tutors, librarians, or in other positions required for the maintenance and upkeep of the school. In practice, most full-time students without other jobs volunteer significantly more time than that. Certain volunteer groups, particularly the gardeners and kitchen staff, have become a sort of informal campus social club.   The neighborhood around the Free School is a common destination for war refugees from Scalados and Dreibach, as well as newly mortal Goblin and Nymph arrivals from the Feywild; this has made the school a hub for multicultural exchange as well.

Public Agenda

The aim of the Free School of Cantonova is to provide all Cantonovans with holistic learning opportunities to better themselves as people and citizens. Courses offered by the school include civics, literature, history, creative and performing arts, ethics and philosophy, arts appreciation, and a wide variety of languages. It also offers a robust variety of classes aimed at adults who may have lacked previous education, such as adult literacy, trade education, practical life skills, and Common language learner courses conducted in Sylvan, Elvish, and the Elemental tongues. The Free School of Cantonova works closely with the Royal Institute of Cantonova to supplement all courses with exposure to the cultural and historical traditions of the city.

History

The Free School of Cantonova was founded in Y1112 by Wargrave Rusalka, with funds from a combined trust between the Royal Arts Commission of Cantonova and her own personal fortune earned as an adventurer. Having grown up as a water nymph in the Near Isles, Rusalka had no access to education until adulthood. She created the Free School to make knowledge more accessible to others like her, as well as to revitalize her local ward in the rapidly-growing Cuarto Folletti district.   In the school's short history, many notable Cantonovans have already served as full-time or guest faculty, including Vanya Robustin (literature and drama), Madame Flora (history), Charlotte Schutz (ethics), Tosca and Figaro (music performance and appreciation).
