Flying Carpet

Flying carpets are carpets capable of magically-assisted Perpetual Flight while supporting the weight of one or more passengers. Current flying carpet technology only works in close proximity to ley lines.

Propulsion

Since current perpetual flight technology is expensive, time-consuming, and impermanent, most flying carpets are not enchanted directly with flight spells. Rather, the yarn used to weave them—typically a combination of sheep's wool and thin mithril foil, though more exotic materials like Fey-goat wool are sometimes seen—is enchanted during the spinning process with a strong affinity for nearby ley-based runic enchantment. When activated within a network designed to channel this magic, this allows the carpet to fly up to two hundred feet above street level.   Several major cities on or near heavy ley line junctions have implemented hidden networks of weather-protected kentanae tiles designed to make their flight possible. The first to do so was Cantonova, which debuted the technology in Y1054 for the coronation of Felipe Roberto Almaviva. Urbana al-Sona and Ettelane have since installed similar networks, and another is currently under construction in Port Nabucco.   There is an ongoing effort from the practical mages of Ettelane to learn and incorporate communicative weaving techniques of the Beacon of the Skylands to serve the purpose of street runes and create a carpet capable of flight within less magical cities, or even over long distances.
